I just realized something replaying through OpenMW. Skyrim and Oblivion basically force-feed you quest objectives. Your journal auto-updates, markers appear, NPCs repeat themselves. But Morrowind? Morrowind will let you completely miss what an NPC said because you weren't paying attention, and then that quest line just... closes off to you.
I was doing a House Hlaalu run and some dude gave me directions to a location using actual compass directions and landmark descriptions. No marker. I wrote it down like an idiot and then forgot about it for like 20 levels. By the time I remembered, I'd progressed so far in the faction that the quest was apparently no longer available. The game just moved on without me.
Skyrim would never. It would put a marker on your map, add it to your active quests, probably have an NPC remind you if you talked to them again. Morrowind treats you like you're supposed to actually be paying attention to what people say. It's genuinely unsettling compared to modern design, but I think I actually respect it more now? Like the game trusts you to care enough to remember things.
Does anyone else remember getting completely locked out of stuff in Morrowind just because you weren't thorough enough with note-taking? Or am I just bad at this game lol
