The Atronach Stone is secretly the best early-game pick and nobody realizes it

I've been thinking about this a lot on my current run. Everyone defaults to Warrior/Thief/Mage depending on their build, but the Atronach Stone actually solves more problems in the first 10 hours than any of them do.

You get 50% magic absorption. That's it. That's the whole thing. But early game? You're getting blasted by mages in every other dungeon and your magicka pool is tiny if you're not a pure caster. One Fireball from a Necromancer and you're chugging potions. With the Atronach Stone, you just... don't take that damage. Half of it goes away before you even feel it.

Plus the magicka regen penalty doesn't matter when you're not relying on spells anyway. And if you ARE doing magic, you're probably not swapping stones mid-playthrough, so you eat the penalty and adapt your playstyle around it.

I'm not saying it's better than Warrior for a sword-and-board guy or Thief for a stealth archer. But for hybrid builds, or for anyone doing their second or third playthrough and just experimenting? It trivializes so much early-game jank that you'd normally solve with better gear or leveling Restoration. You can just... ignore mages. Walk through their spells.

What's your early-game stone pick usually? I'm curious if I'm just discovering something everyone else already knew.

I think you're onto something, but I'd push back a bit on the "nobody realizes it" part - the Atronach Stone has always been solid, it's just that the magicka regen penalty is genuinely brutal if you're doing anything spell-heavy, and a lot of people swap stones later anyway once they have better gear and actual mana sustain figured out.

That said, you're right that for pure melee builds in the early game it's almost a cheat code. A Fireball that only does 25 damage instead of 50 is massive when you're wearing iron armor at level 5. The absorption is way more valuable than people give it credit for because mages are legitimately the scariest enemy type before you get decent magic resistance from perks and enchantments.

Where I'd disagree though is that the regen penalty doesn't matter. If you're hybrid - like a sword-and-spell guy - you're actually getting punished twice: you lose half your already-tiny magicka pool regen, AND you're still taking spell damage because you're not full melee. The Atronach Stone works best when you commit hard to NOT casting, which limits your build flexibility more than you might think on a second or third playthrough where you want to experiment.

That said, if you're just doing a pure warrior or pure archer run? Yeah, Atronach early and swap to Steed or Thief later is probably better than I've been playing it. What build are you running that made you notice this?
