Alteration is secretly the best utility school and vanilla perks just suck at showing it

I've been running a pure Alteration build on my current playthrough (Ordinator, no combat spells allowed) and I'm genuinely shocked at how much the vanilla perk tree fails this school. Like, Mage Armor is fine for defense, but the whole tree feels like it's apologizing for existing.

The thing is, Alteration does SO much if you actually use it. Paralyze, Transmute Ore, Calming spells, water breathing, detect life - it's got utility for days. But vanilla perks don't reward any of that. You get Mage Armor ranks and... that's kind of it? There's no perk that makes Paralyze last longer or hit harder. No perk for transmutation speed. Nothing that makes you feel like you're specializing in shape-shifting reality.

Ordinator fixes this completely - suddenly there are perks that actually matter for what Alteration does, and you're not just stacking +25% damage or whatever. But it made me realize how dead vanilla Alteration feels as a skill tree. It's the school that should feel the most creative and experimental, and instead it's just "wear this buff and move on."

Anyone else run pure Alteration without mods? How did you even make it work? Or is this just a "vanilla perk trees are fundamentally broken" thing and I'm late to the party.

Yeah, vanilla Alteration is a mess. The perk tree basically gives up halfway through and just repeats Mage Armor ranks instead of actually supporting what the school does. You're right that it's weird - Alteration has some of the most interesting spells in the game but the progression tree treats it like a dumping ground.

The thing is, even with Ordinator it's still a support school, so you're never going to feel like a pure Alteration mage the way you'd feel piloting a Destruction or Conjuration build. But vanilla takes that and makes it actively painful. There's no reason the tree couldn't have perks that boost spell duration, reduce casting costs for utility spells, or make Paralyze actually scary. Instead you get to perk 30 and you're done, just rotating Mage Armor buffs.

I've never seriously tried vanilla pure Alteration because honestly it sounds rough. Even on my modded runs I usually dip into Restoration or Conjuration to have something to do in combat. Ordinator at least gives you perks that make sense - stuff that actually feeds into the fantasy of being a transmutation specialist rather than just "buff guy who occasionally paralyzes things."

How's the Ordinator run going otherwise? Are you doing any melee, or is it genuinely no-combat-spells-only?
