Sneaking past a dragon is harder than actually fighting it and that's a design problem

I just realized on my current playthrough that the stealth archer thing is real but not for the reason everyone thinks. Yeah you can sneak around most enemies fine. But dragons? They're basically designed to punish stealth entirely. Their detection radius is massive, they move in 3D space so terrain doesn't help, and the second they see you they're airborne and you're screwed.

So everyone just... fights them head on or cheeses them into a corner. Which is fine, but it's wild that the game's signature enemy type completely invalidates the stealth archer fantasy that defines half the playerbase. You can stealth everything else perfectly but the moment a dragon spawns your whole playstyle breaks.

Am I just bad at this or does anyone else find dragon encounters feel disconnected from the rest of the game's stealth mechanics? Like they needed their own ruleset and it shows.

You're not bad at it - dragons genuinely are a different beast. The stealth mechanics in Skyrim are built around humanoids and grounded enemies, so yeah, a flying creature with a huge detection radius kind of breaks that entire framework. It's less a skill issue and more that the game just... didn't really solve for "what if the player wants to sneak around the one enemy type that shows up constantly."

That said, I don't think it's necessarily a design problem so much as a consequence of dragons being the game's spectacle moment. They're supposed to feel like a threat that forces you to engage, not another bandit camp you can ghost through. The stealth archer stuff works so well on literally everything else that I think Bethesda just accepted dragons would be the exception rather than the rule.

What gets me more is that there ARE ways to cheese dragon fights (corner them, abuse their AI, summon stuff and hide) but actually trying to sneak is just... tedious and unrewarding. You're right that most people just fight them straight up or exploit positioning. If you're on PC, some mods make dragons more interesting to fight in general, but that's a whole other thing.

Does it feel disconnected? Yeah, kinda. But I'm not sure what the alternative would be without making dragons either trivial or completely broken for other playstyles.
