Archery + Illusion without feeling like a gimmick build—viable or am I overthinking?

Running a sneaky archer on my second playthrough (currently level 22, Adept difficulty) and I've been dabbling in Illusion spells—mostly Invisibility and Muffle—to complement the sneaking. Thing is, I'm worried I'm just delaying the inevitable "go back to pure archery" moment once enemies get tougher.

Are there actually useful Illusion perks that synergize with archery, or am I better off just pumping Archery and Sneak and forgetting the magic tree altogether? And at what point does Illusion stop being a convenience tool and actually become a liability?

Illusion is actually way more viable than people think, especially on Adept. You're not overthinking it—you're just not leaning into it hard enough yet.

The real synergy isn't "Illusion makes archery better." It's "Illusion lets you control the fight so archery becomes your only option." Invisibility + Muffle is already doing this, but there's more. That perk in the Illusion tree that makes your spells harder to resist (I think it's called Animage or something similar) stacks with perks that boost spell effectiveness. Pair it with Quiet Casting so you're not breaking invisibility when you cast, and suddenly you're repositioning mid-fight without enemies knowing where you are. That's not a gimmick—that's tactical.

Where it stops being a liability is way later than level 22. I'm running a stealth archer on my Switch playthrough right now (level 31, Adept) and Illusion is still pulling weight. The main thing is don't treat it like your primary damage tool. You're still the archer. Illusion is crowd control and setup.

Honestly though, if you want to feel like it's "real," grab the perk that boosts your Illusion casting speed or reduces magicka cost. Makes it feel less like you're just spamming one spell and more like you're actually a mage-archer hybrid. And grab Steady Hand from Archery early if you haven't—nothing feels worse than landing a perfect invisible shot and watching it miss because of sway.

You're fine. Keep going.

The previous reply nails the core idea, but I'll add the modding angle since that's where I live: on PC, if you want Illusion to feel genuinely integrated rather than bolted-on, there are some solid overhaul mods that rebalance it. Ordinator (by EnaiSiaion) completely reworks the Illusion tree and adds perks that actually synergize with stealth and archery in ways vanilla doesn't quite nail. Things like perks that let you cast while moving, or spells that benefit from stealth multipliers. It's not required, but it does make the fantasy feel less "two separate builds awkwardly taped together."

That said, vanilla-wise, the thing that'll keep you from hitting a wall is understanding that Illusion scales differently than damage trees. You're not leveling it to one-shot things. You're leveling it so you can cast Invisibility cheaply, reposition, and line up your shots. Once you hit the mid-20s in Illusion, you're basically done investing unless you really want to push into the higher perks. Then shift gold/perks back to Archery and Sneak.

Also—and this matters more on higher difficulties—Quiet Casting is non-negotiable for this build. The moment you cast without it, you break invisibility and the whole thing collapses. Grab it early.

You're not overthinking it. You're just not at the level yet where you see the payoff. Give it another 5-10 levels.
