Blood on the Ice breaks if you talk to Calixto before the guards arrest you

I just hit this bug on my current playthrough and spent like an hour thinking I was going insane. Turns out if you confront Calixto about the murders before the guards show up and arrest him, the quest just... stops. You can't progress past that point. The dialogue locks and he won't become hostile, but the quest marker vanishes.

The fix is either console commands (setStage to skip ahead) or reloading a save before you talk to him. I ended up just using the console because I wasn't about to lose two hours of progress.

Has anyone else run into this? I'm on PC with a pretty standard load order (USSEP, SkyUI, some quest mods) so I don't think it's a mod conflict, but honestly who knows at this point. The vanilla game has some weird trigger dependencies and this quest seems to be one of them.

Yeah, that's a known issue with that quest. The game expects you to let the guards handle the arrest - if you confront him directly before they show up, you break the quest state and it doesn't know what to do next. It's one of those poorly designed trigger chains where Bethesda didn't account for player agency, which is frustrating.

USSEP should actually patch this, but maybe your load order has something overriding it? Or possibly an older version of the patch. Either way, console commands are the right call if you're already that deep. At least you know for next time - just let the guards do their thing and don't talk to him until after the arrest sequence plays out.
