Combat feels impossible until you get lucky—is there a build that actually works early on?

Coming from Skyrim, I'm getting absolutely destroyed in Morrowind even against basic stuff. My character keeps missing attacks constantly, and when enemies DO hit me, it chunks half my health. I'm level 5-ish with a longsword and light armor, and I feel like I'm doing something fundamentally wrong with how builds work here. Is there a specific early-game approach that doesn't feel like I'm just flailing until I get lucky, or do I need to reroll and pick different skills from the start?

Wait, you're asking about Morrowind but posting on the Skyrim forum? That's throwing me off a bit. Anyway, the hit chance thing in Morrowind is genuinely different from what you're used to - it's not just animation, it's actually calculated based on your skill vs. enemy armor and your agility stat. You can swing at something point-blank and still miss because the math says you miss.

Early game Morrowind is brutal if you don't build around this. The classic fix is to either pump a combat skill super high before you leave Seyda Neen (by leveling it up during char creation, not just equipping the weapon), or go full magic and cast Weakness to Blunt/Slash on enemies so they can't hit you back. Alternatively, abuse the alchemy system - potions are busted in Morrowind and you can make healing potions cheap enough to spam.

If you want melee to feel less terrible right now without rerolling, grab a bow. Ranged combat scales differently and you'll actually land shots. Then just grind your sword skill on mudcrabs or something while you're traveling between quests - sounds dumb but it works.

What's your character's Agility stat at right now? That's half the problem usually.

Yeah, the Agility thing is huge - I'd check that first before you do anything else. If it's like 30-40, you're basically fighting with your eyes closed no matter what weapon you pick.

But real talk, the bow suggestion is solid and I'd actually lean harder into it. Ranged just works better early on because you're not fighting the RNG as much, and honestly? Morrowind's bow combat is way more satisfying than Skyrim's once you get the hang of it. You can actually kite stuff instead of just standing there praying your sword connects. Grab some cheap iron or steel arrows from the Silt Strider guy in Balmora and just... hunt things for a bit. Mudcrabs, rats, whatever. Your Marksman skill will climb fast and you'll actually feel like you're improving.

The alchemy thing the other poster mentioned - don't sleep on it. You can make potions that heal you for like 5 gold each if you know what you're doing with the ingredients around Seyda Neen. Healing potion spam is genuinely how a lot of people survive early Morrowind without breaking the game. It's not elegant but it works.

If you really want to stick with the sword though, you need to either accept that you're going to miss a ton until your skill gets higher, or reroll with your combat skill as a major/specialization so it starts at like 25-30 instead of 5. The early game is specifically designed to punish you if you don't plan around the skill system. Skyrim lets you just equip a weapon and figure it out; Morrowind absolutely does not.
