Heavy Armor perk trees are criminally underbuilt compared to Light Armor

I've been running a heavy armor tank on my current playthrough and honestly it's wild how many people sleep on the perk tree. Everyone's obsessed with Light Armor's movement speed perks and matching set bonuses, but Heavy Armor has some genuinely nasty stuff if you actually commit to it.

Like, the perk that reduces damage taken scales way better than people realize, especially once you stack it with Mage Armor or actual armor rating. And then there's the one that staggers enemies on block - I'm using that with a shield and it's turning combat into something completely different than my usual stealth archer runs. You can actually control a room instead of just backstabbing things.

The problem is everyone hits 50 Heavy Armor, grabs the obvious perks, and then pivots to Smithing or something. But if you actually spend points in the later tree you get access to some wild defensive scaling that makes you feel genuinely tanky instead of just... armored.

Has anyone else gone deep into Heavy Armor and actually felt like it clicked? Or am I just finding fun in a tree that's objectively worse and I'm coping about it lol

You're not coping, but you're also kind of proving the point against yourself. The damage reduction perk is solid, yeah, but it caps out at like 50% mitigation and requires you to dump a ton of points just to get there. Light Armor gets comparable effective durability through Deft Movement and Custom Fit with way fewer perks invested, plus you're not slow as hell while you're at it.

The stagger-on-block thing is genuinely fun though - that's the one thing Heavy Armor does that Light Armor can't really replicate. Shield builds in general are underrated imo. But that's kind of the problem: Heavy Armor's identity is basically "be a slower, tankier version of Light Armor" when it should feel like a completely different playstyle. You're trading mobility and damage output for defense, and the math just doesn't work out unless you're specifically optimizing for it.

That said, if you're actually enjoying the tank fantasy on your current run, keep going. Matching Set bonus does feel good when you're fully decked out in heavy stuff, and there's something satisfying about face-tanking a dragon that would one-shot your stealth archer. It's just not optimal, and Bethesda's perk scaling has always favored offense over defense.
