Illusion assassin build hits a wall around level 35—perks or playstyle issue?

I'm on my third playthrough running a pure Illusion build with daggers, and it absolutely melts stuff through level 30. Muffle + Invisibility + backstab = chef's kiss. But now I'm in the mid-40s and even with Quiet Casting and all the Illusion perks, mages and dragons just see through it or tank the damage before I can land a second hit.

Am I missing something obvious in the Illusion tree, or do I need to pivot to something like Mayhem + Invisibility instead of trying to chain backstabs? Playing on Legendary with USSEP so I can't cheese too hard. Is this just the wall every Illusion build hits or did I spec wrong?

The issue isn't your spec - Illusion itself just doesn't scale well past mid-game on Legendary. You're running into the hard ceiling where enemy resistances and raw HP outpace what invisibility + dagger damage can do solo.

That said, you're not forced into pure Mayhem either. The real fix is layering: keep the invisibility opener but add something that actually sticks. Paralysis through Alchemy is your friend here - a paralysis poison on your dagger backstab will lock down even dragons long enough for a second hit. Alternatively, if you're willing to dip into Destruction, a single point in the frost damage perk plus augmented frost lets you stack slow effects without breaking character too badly. The mage/dragon problem specifically is that they're mobile and high-HP, so you need either lockdown or raw spike damage.

If you want to stay pure Illusion, Mayhem actually works better than you'd think on Legendary - cast it, slip invisibility, let enemies tear each other apart while you backstab the stragglers. It's less "cool assassin" and more "chaos coordinator" but it trivializes the scaling problem.

One thing to check: are you using any mods that buff Illusion? Ordinator completely changes the tree if you're on PC and makes Illusion viable into endgame. If you're vanilla + USSEP only, yeah, you're just hitting the wall the game designed. Vanilla Illusion is genuinely a hard mode perk tree past level 40.

What's your current gear and dagger? If you're still using iron daggers that could be part of it too.

That paralysis point is solid, but fair warning - if you're strict about staying pure Illusion, alchemy poisons don't really count as "the build" the way perks do. They're more of a bandaid. Not that there's anything wrong with using them, just wanted to flag that distinction since you seemed pretty committed to the Illusion identity.

The Mayhem thing though - I'd actually lean into it harder than the previous reply suggested. Not as a fallback, but as a real pivot. Cast Mayhem, go invisible, and the genius part is you can just wait while they kill each other. On Legendary that's actually faster than trying to out-damage a dragon solo with daggers. You're not really playing Illusion assassin anymore, you're playing Illusion controller, and it feels different enough that it might scratch a different itch once you get into it.

One more thing to check before you respec: what's your Illusion skill level at? If you're not maxed or close to it, pumping that out first might buy you another 5-10 levels before the wall really hits. The spell effectiveness scaling is real. But yeah, if you're already 80+ and still getting resisted hard, that's just the tree's ceiling talking, and you'll need the layering approach no matter what.
