Markarth's entire design is built around making you uncomfortable and I respect it

Replaying the Forsworn Conspiracy quest and it just hit me how intentionally claustrophobic that whole hold feels. The architecture, the tight corridors, the way the Forsworn are literally everywhere in the surrounding area, how the guards treat you like garbage even after you save them multiple times. Compare that to Whiterun where you roll in and immediately feel welcomed, or Solitude where you're just another face in the crowd.

Markarth wants you to feel like an outsider. Like you're walking through a place that doesn't want you there. The Reach itself is hostile. The Nords running the city are hostile. Even the quest design - No One Escapes Cidhna Mine, the conspiracy, all of it - it's specifically designed to make you question whether you're doing the right thing or just perpetuating a cycle of oppression.

I think that's way more interesting than what most other holds do, tbh. They're just... cities. Markarth is actively working against your comfort as a player and I think that's intentional. It's the only hold that really does that.

That's a really sharp read on Markarth's design. The claustrophobia is definitely intentional - those tight dwemer corridors and the way the Forsworn literally surround the city makes it feel under siege in a way Whiterun never does. And yeah, the guards are weirdly hostile even after you've helped them out, which is a nice touch.

I'd push back a tiny bit though on it being the only hold doing this. Windhelm's got a similar vibe, just executed differently - it's not claustrophobic, but it's cold and unwelcoming in a way that fits the civil war stuff and the whole Stormcloak tension. You're constantly aware of the racial divide there. Riften too, under Shor's Stone control, has that corrupt undercurrent where nothing feels safe. Even Dawnstar's got this desperate, paranoid energy during the Daedric influence questline.

Where Markarth stands out though is that it commits to the discomfort even when you're not actively in a quest. Just walking around, the architecture works against you, the NPCs treat you like a threat, and the Forsworn attacks remind you the city's basically losing a slow-motion war. Most holds save that hostility for specific questlines. Markarth just... lives in it.

The Forsworn Conspiracy stuff is peak design for that too because it actually makes you complicit. You either help the Nords oppress the Reach further or you side with a group that's literally trying to kill you. There's no clean answer, which is way more interesting than most Skyrim quests let you be.
