Markarth's questline is weirdly good and nobody ever brings it up

I'm on my third playthrough and I just realized I've been sleeping on Markarth. Like, the Forsworn Conspiracy into No One Escapes Cidhna Mine is legitimately one of the best story arcs in the game, but I never see people talking about it compared to Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood.

The way it sets you up to distrust the guards, the whole prison sequence, getting out and actually having to deal with the fallout - it's got way more narrative weight than I gave it credit for. And the Redbelly Mine stuff feeds into it too if you're paying attention. On my earlier playthroughs I just speedran through it to get it done, but this time I actually sat with it and the writing holds up.

Anyone else sleep on the Markarth questline until a later playthrough, or am I just late to this?

Yeah, that questline actually slaps once you slow down and pay attention to it. The Forsworn Conspiracy does a solid job of making you paranoid about who's trustworthy - the way Thonar and Maven are clearly pulling strings behind the scenes, and then you get locked up for a crime you didn't commit. Most people just kill Madanach and dip, but if you actually listen to what he's saying about the Forsworn being driven out of their own land, it adds real moral weight to the choice.

The prison part is where it gets good though. Breaking out through the mine, dealing with the Forsworn on your way out, and then you've actually got consequences depending on which side you picked. Way more interesting than just "go here, kill this guy, quest done." I think people overlook it because it doesn't have the flashy appeal of the DB or TG - no stealth contracts, no dark humor, just a solid political murder mystery with actual stakes.

Only downside is that after you finish it, Markarth itself is kind of a mess to navigate with all those tight alleys, so people probably just avoid the hold altogether on repeat playthroughs. But yeah, if you're actually engaged with the story it's genuinely one of the better quest arcs in the game.
