Windstad Manor's layout is genuinely worse than people pretend

okay so I just finished building out Windstad on my current playthrough and I need to vent because everyone keeps saying it's underrated or whatever, but the actual footprint of that place is a nightmare. Like, the fish hatchery is cool I guess, but you end up with this stretched-out mess where your main hall is basically disconnected from everything else. I ended up having to route all my storage into the hatchery building just to make it feel less scattered.

Lakeview and Heljarchen both let you cluster stuff around a central courtyard. Windstad just forces you to walk across the map to get to your alchemy station. And don't even get me started on trying to fit a trophy room anywhere without it looking like an afterthought bolted onto the side.

Am I just bad at planning these things or does Windstad actually have a worse layout than people admit? Like I get that the location is great for hunting and fishing, but I'd trade that for a homestead that doesn't feel so strung out.

I think you're onto something, but I'd push back a little on how much of it is the layout vs. how you're using the layout. Windstad definitely feels more spread out than Lakeview - that's just the geography of the plot. But I've seen people do some clever stuff by leaning into it instead of fighting it.

Like, the hatchery building being separate doesn't have to be a bad thing if you think of it as a dedicated work area. One of my playthroughs I basically made the hatchery my "alchemy and crafting wing" and kept the main hall for storage and display. Made the walk feel intentional rather than annoying. That said, yeah, if you want everything clustered and walkable in 5 seconds, Windstad loses to Lakeview hard.

The trophy room thing I get though. The building plots feel weirdly constrained compared to Lakeview's courtyard setup. You're basically forced into a linear arrangement and it does look tacked-on.

Honestly I think Windstad is more about accepting what it is - a scattered hunting lodge vibe - rather than trying to make it into a cozy compact homestead. If that doesn't appeal to you, Lakeview just wins. Nothing wrong with that.
