My RP issue....

MjolnirV

xDoctor Bob
Every time I start a new character in Skyrim I go for some sort of RP play style. Personality, questslines, skills, etcetera are all thought of ahead of time. When I first start out I go to Riverwood and stick to the RP personality and I enjoy the game for what it is: a wide open world filled with mystery and adventure. However once I get the ball rolling with questlines I lose track of playing from an RP point of view. I'm always fast traveling, telling myself "I'll quickly finish this then get back to the enjoyment." But I usually just end up snowballing into other mischief so my RP character feels more like a power player.

Usually I end up taking a pause from the numerous quests clogging my journal and do my own thing.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Yes, all the time. I love to RP my character's and I'm currently in the process of doing a Hunger Games themed RP. If you've never heard of the Hunger Games, you should really check it out. I'm making a girl, and there are 12 districts all around Skyrim. Solitude is the Capitol and every year they pick two tributes between the ages of 12 to 18 to compete in a festival and are placed into an arena to fight to the death until one team/victor remains. They do this to remind the districts of the Great War, and all the lives it cost. I decided the Storm-cloak Rebellion would be an uprising against these sadistic Games and the Imperial's would be solider's of the Capitol (along with the Thalmor as Peacekeeps ). My character is seemingly reeled in from the border, caught in a Captiol amush and automatically becomes a tribute to compete in this years games for her ''crimes'' against Skyrim's people. She escapes Helgen and flees to District 12 (Riverwood), where she hunts and fishes to support Ralof's family.

I've tried doing this all before because I think it was a really great Skyrim adaption to the Hunger Games books and movie but it failed. I ended up getting bored and joining the Thieves Guild to do some half-ass quests for Mercer Frey. But whatever, I'll do this one day! But I completely know what you mean by getting distracted by other quests, which make you sometimes have to do certain things that won't fit in with your story-line and character background.

You summed up precisely how I feel as well....it's why I haven't even played this game more than a few hours a week these days, if that.

Recently I wanted to create a Nord which was part of the Skaal village on Solstheim, dressed in their clothing. Doing some hunting, but also sometimes go on adventure (let's face it, I would never be able to just play a character that was hunting and other "mundane" stuff). So then I wanted him to create the stahlrim armor. I also wanted to write a Journal of the character's life. My problem is more that I get to think of another type of character and start a new game before I've begun the previous one! For this one to really start I would first have to go through the beginning of the main quest which I have done many times before.

I understand the plight as well. My original Cordelia was always my "experience everything" character that a personality and story grew around. I've recently re-created her to play more strictly by the character's personality, because one of the things I found was how little atmosphere seems to exist when you fast travel everywhere, including to and from quest locations.

What keeps me rooted in the game, though, is the refusal to fast travel for anything but "market trips" to sell off excess weight. Then I head right back to where I was and continue on foot once more. Personally, I also stop for regular meals, and "sleep" on the road if I'm caught out after dark too far from an in or viable camp. I also make use of military and mining camps for beds, as they aren't officially claimed by any one person. Regardless of what else you want to throw on for your character's personal journey, just enforcing a No Fast Travel (except for X), where X is extremely limited, should be enough to keep you from falling too out of character. Most of the time. ^__^

You're signature drove me crazy. :(

"And the dragon will come when he hears the drum at a minute or two to two today, at a minute or two to two."

two to two to... Edit: I actually thought that was your intention. :P

You have a decent fantasy there :D

Visthalu: It's the last line of a chorus in Edward German's opera "Merrie England" cir. 1902, though most people will recognize it as a tongue twister actors use backstage to warm up. The song is named after the first line sung,"Oh! Here's a to-do to die today".

"Oh! Here's a to-do to die today
At a minute or two to two;
A thing distinctly hard to say
And harder still to do.
For they'll beat a tattoo at two to two,
A rat-a-tat-tat tattoo-oo-oo,
And the dragon will come when it hears the drum
At a minute or two to two today,
At a minute or two to two."

The last line got stuck in my head the other day when I was on the site, so I added it to the signature.

And with that all squared away, I return you to your regularly scheduled conversation already in progress. ^__^

That explains it :) I liked it but I couldn't even read it fast mentally, lol :)
