Need help with marraige

I got the amulet of Mara by doing the Book of Love quest, I talked to the one priest in Riften about marriage, I'm wearing the amulet, but still no dialogue options about marriage come up for any marriage candidate, so wtf do I do now?

Almost all the possible marriage candidates require that you complete a quest for them beforehand, so make sure you've done those. Also, I've heard that sometimes a particular Amulet of Mara may not register with the NPC for some reason. Simply bin it and get another one - they can be found as loot, or you can get one at the Bee and Barb in Riften. Also, your houses in Whiterun and Solitude should contain one once they've been upgraded. Hope this helps :-)

I thought the amulet allowed for those quests to happen, like you go up to the NPC and ask to marry and then they just tell you the quest. What would the quest be if I were to marry Lydia? She is the housecarl in Whiterun.

You can't marry Lydia - it seems its a mistake/oversight. Apparently, she was intended to be marriageable but for some reason it didn't make it into the game. If you're playin on PC there's a console code to force marriage with her. Most of the quests for marriageable characters aren't related directly to marriage. They are simply tasks you can complete for them, with or without the Amulet. For instance, Ysolda in Whiterun asks you to get her a mammoth tusk. You can do this at any time, and from that point on she is marriageable.

Yeah, I went and spelunked for Mjoll's Grimsever sword and after returning it to her, she was available for wedlock. Once I had the amulet on and started the coversation wheel with her, done deal. She makes an awesome follower, too. Wouldn't trade her for six followers. Even talked my real-life wife into using her as a follower, and she's never looked back since. Er, my wife, not Mjoll.

Ok, thanks for clearing this up with me, both of you. Another small question, do you have to have the amulet on to know if someone is marriage able, or does it have like a dialogue option that is boxed out, kind of hinting towards the fact that you must have the amulet on. Because it would be nice not to wear it and get a bonus from a different amulet and only wear it when necessary.

Yeah, you have to have it on so any prospective partners know you're available. However, you don't have to wear at all times, just when you think you might be interested or are ready to pop the question. Otherwise, if you need to wear a protective necklace for battle, etc., do so and then swap amulets when that special someone catches your eye. And you're right. You'll know they're available when you start to talk to them. The options will be right there for you to see in their conversation choices.

Okay, thanks you very much! :D
