replaying Oblivion after like eight years and I just hit the Arena. I remembered it being kind of bland but man, it's actively painful. You just... fight increasingly leveled opponents in a ring until you're the Grand Champion. That's it. No story hooks, no rival characters that matter, no stakes beyond "win fight get gold."
Compare that to literally any Skyrim questline where you're at least doing something between combat encounters. The Companions have you investigating Kodlak's curse, you're dealing with the Silver Hand, there's actual narrative texture. Even the basic radiant jobs in the Thieves Guild feel more purposeful than just grinding Arena matches.
I get that Oblivion had way more questlines to pack in and maybe the Arena was meant to be a low-effort grind option, but it's wild how empty it feels. The Shivering Isles spoiled me I guess because that DLC understood how to make a progression feel earned.
Anyone else remember it being this thin or am I just too used to Skyrim's structure now?
