Paralysis poison + melee—is there a perk combo that makes it feel legit?

So I'm doing a playthrough where I'm trying to actually use poisons instead of just crafting them and forgetting they exist. Paralysis seems broken in the best way, but I feel like I'm cheating if I'm just spamming it on every hit. Is there a One-Handed or Alchemy perk path that makes poisoning feel like an actual build mechanic rather than just a damage multiplier? Or am I overthinking this and should just commit to the cheese?

yeah, you're not overthinking it—paralysis is genuinely broken and most people just accept that. but if you want to make it feel like an actual build choice instead of just "press poisoned dagger button," there's a couple angles.

first, commit to the alchemy tree. get the perks that increase poison potency and let you apply multiple poisons per hit—that's where the real depth is. instead of just paralysis carrying you, you're layering effects. paralysis + ravage health or lingering damage poison creates this whole synergy thing. suddenly you're thinking about which poisons to stack instead of just "paralysis go brr."

second, the one-handed tree has some perks that reward consistent weapon hits (like the one that boosts damage after consecutive strikes), so if you're actually landing your poisoned hits as part of a combo rather than relying on paralysis to carry you, it feels less cheesy. you're using the poison as a setup tool, not the whole build.

honestly though? if you're on PC, there are alchemy overhauls that make poisons way more interesting mechanically—stuff that changes how potency works or adds new effects. on Switch you're stuck with vanilla, so the layering approach is your best bet.

the real answer is: don't fight the paralysis cheese, just limit it yourself. like, only poison your main weapon, or only use it on tough fights, or go full pacifist and just paralysis-lock everything for fun. that's still a valid build, just own it.

That's solid advice. I'd add: if you're actually going the alchemy route, don't sleep on the perks that let you craft stronger poisons in the first place—the ones that boost your alchemy skill's effect on potency. Stacking those with the application perks means your paralysis poison is legitimately your creation, not just "I found a recipe." Feels different when you've invested 6+ perks into making it work.

But real talk: paralysis is broken because it's supposed to be. It's a Daedric effect, it costs a ton to craft, and you're spending alchemy perks on it. The game's balance is just... not great at stopping you from going nuclear. On my current run I'm doing exactly what the previous reply said—only poisoning my main dagger, not my off-hand, and saving paralysis for actual threats. Everything else gets ravage health or lingering damage. Makes the paralysis feel earned instead of spammable.

Also worth noting: if you're on PC and willing to mod, there are alchemy frameworks that completely rework how poisons interact with perks and enemy resistances. Turns it into actual theory-crafting. But if you're vanilla or console, the self-imposed limit thing is genuinely your best path to not feeling like you're just cheesing through Skyrim.
