Playin a Mage, heavy armor or robes?

Real "Mages" don't use destruction magic. Conjuration and Illusion for primary and alteration and enchant for secondary. Don't use armor just flesh spells. Illusion for crowd control, Conjuration for your main source of damage output and carry a dagger just in case, you don't need to be good at using the dagger just let the enchantments on it do the work. Plus with no destruction the game gets a lot more interesting and challenging. That in my opinion is a true Mage.

After reading this thread, I think I am going to build a Battlemage. My Altmer will be using Heavy Armor, 1H, Illusion, Conjuration, and Destruction. A couple of points will be put into Smithing & Restoration as time goes by, but they aren't a high priority. Of course, training with the Companions will be essential early on, as will an extended college visit.

No no no. Magic enchantments are BAD on HA compared to robes and LA.

Besides, Mages need stamina to run from baddies!

The "0 glitch" isn't a glitch, it's an exploit. A glitch is a malfunction, and as this simply doesn't have a cap, it's an exploit.

1. I said I'm my opinion. mages don't use destruction
2. I've never fully watched a harry potter movie but I'm pretty sure he's a Wizard not a mage. Mages in TES can cast all types of magic without a wand.

i wasn't knocking you for it, its just i've never heard anyone have that idea of a mage, its different thats all, no big.. this gives me an idea though, wonder if its possible to create a wand using mage like on the harry potter movies? you could make ALL your magic attacks come from staffs! can't believe nobodies thought of this, i really need to give this idea to fudgemuppet, thanks for sparking the idea m8.

Lol cool, sorry I thought you were knocking me. And as for the staff idea I don't think it would work, if you rely on staffs too much you don't level up your skills much therefore don't level up as much.

agreed it would be a difficult build to manage, i forgot staff blasts technically don't level up that school of magic, plus the constant need for lots and LOTS of soul gems would get very expensive.. it would be something new to try out if you ever wanted a seriously challenging mage character.

true.. the best thing about staffs is they don't weigh much, so if you're an all legit player you carry a LOT of them, only down side is the constant need for soul gems if u wanna keep using them. I often find myself using staffs even if i have the spell, just cause they look cool, especially the rare falmer staffs you can occasionally loot in dwemor ruins.

Well, I did know that the effectiveness of a staff is related to the user, as in the skill level of the user in that school will determine the amount of charges the staff can use.

You can create a Staff of the Flame Atronach, Staff of the Frost Atronach, or a Staff of the Storm Atronach there. Three pretty good ones, if you can remember to acquire the ingredients.....

There's two paths you can take.

A. Generic
B. Creative

if you chose path A, you chose to wear Robes, as that's what just about all Mages wear.

if you chose path B, you chose Heavy Armour, because that's being outside the norm for the typical Mage stereotype.

One could also argue that one who wears Heavy Armour and casts Spells is a Battlemage.

whaaa... are you serious??? holy balls batman! i honestly never knew that.. i always just place like a million fortify magicka on an item for my unlimited spell usage, probably why it never worked for me, i am learning lots today indeed.

Yeah, it's true. My gear has two magic trees that equal out to 100% reduction so every spell costs 0 magicka. Also, this means you can save the perk points you'd spend from novice/expert/master/etc. spells because they don't do anything when you're already at 0, extra perks points are nice

so does that mean if i enchant an item i'm wearing with 100% reduction of alteration spells my staff of paralysis will no longer require soul gems???
