Rebuilding a Legend...

MadHatter

Guy with a cool hat.
Due to a recent corruption of my saved game file, I lost my most favorite character of all time, "Snorri Black-Nose", a dual-wielding blood-thirsty sneaky barbarian/blacksmith type of character... Some stuff went down... he's toast...

Fast forward to present day.. I've decided to recreate the legend with his successor of badassery "Hrolvar"... I'm having a slight issue in a decision which I'm hoping some others here could help give some input on but in order to do that, you must understand his general character build and background.. so here goes.

Long story short, Hrolvar was raised by his Nord's Nord father in Cyrodil, trained to be a blacksmith and handy with his weapons and ale... He made his father proud.... but what his father didnt know was the fact that ol' Hrolvar snuck out of town every night to learn a more sinister path to help further his art from an old dunmer hag(my CoC/MadGod) Hrolvar picked up some minor skills in enchantment, necromancy and healing arts. He left Cyrodil after his father died, finding the small town to be of little consequence, unable to help him fulfill his goals of being the best smith in tamriel.

His general build setup? : Light Armor, Two-handed, Archery, Conjuration, Restoration, Smithing, Enchanting, Sneak.

Current lowbie affiliations : Thane of Whiterun, Thieves Guild Newb, (will join the college)

My dilemma? The Dawnguard DLC... I have some difficulty deciding what I'm going to do with him.

Join the Volkihar?
pros - Immortality(more time to master his craft), power of shadows, less of a do-good-feel. Necromage.
cons - Lose access to the Dawnguard restoration spells, armor and crossbows. Restoration spells like circle of protection might hurt?

Join Dawnguard?
pros - badass looking armor (red sleeveless in particular, fitting of a smith), Amazing restoration spells, crossbows.
cons - Passing up the opportunity to be immortal, Feels restrictive? (look at me! I'm a vamp slayer! lulz!), Kind of the opposite of someone who would go any lengths for power?

Serana can make you a vampire at anytime after the quest line so I wouldnt consider this a con.

I understand that. However, that would make no sense from a RP perspective. What point would there be in doing the Dawnguard quests only to turn myself into a vampire and never be able to interact with them again unless I cured myself? That makes no sense to me. I'd either have Hrolvar go full on vamp or full on Dawnguard... Right now, I'm starting to lean more heavily towards vamp.

Serana is a vampire who joins the Dawnguard. I think there is probably a few rp angles that can work here.

I suppose going full on vamp all the time would be an issue though with NPS's.

Could always do some Witch Hunter type build.

I always prefer the Dawnguard. I like their armor, kind of a more medieval feel to it. I don't really wear the Light armor version, since I dislike the helmet for light.

Using a calm spell on the Dawnguard vendors as a Volkhair will allow you to purchase the restoration spells sun fire, vampire's bane, and stendarr's aura.

I strongly disagree here. The roleplay path I choose is very complex, and that fits in perfectly. If you don't likeit don't use it.

Spoilers ahead

Join the Dawnguard. pretty much all the same rewards and no consequences or bad morals... unless you're me. I'm not really a hater of vampires in TES. Only thing you will miss out on would be blood potions and a more powerful version of necromantic healing.

Correct. There are a few RP angles that can work, yes. However, like you stated.. Not entirely sure Dawnguard would be entirely too pleased with a full on vampire in their midst. From my perspective, I think the only reason why the rest of the Dawnguard even tolerates Serana is because of the PC essentially having a metaphorical chain wrapped around her pretty little neck, regardless of the huge role she played in the main quest line.

The only way I can see this working is if Hrolvar could somehow keep his vamprism a secret from the Dawnguard. I suppose as long as he kept himself well fed and never showed his vamp powers infront of the Dawnguard, that would work. Is there even a viable mod for that? Wonder what kind of motivation he would have to join up with a bunch of people who would want to kill him if they ever found out what he was... Hmmm. Especially after Harkon offers him some straight up Beast-Mode.

Huh, never thought about that. Looking at Hrolvar's build as it is.. I suppose he is something of a witch hunter. Not at all what I intended when I created him, lol.

Would that work if let's say the vamp in question joined the dawnguard, rendering them non-hostile as it is but refusing to deal with you until you're cured? Otherwise it would require calming everyone in the vamp's path and well... Hrolvar has no illusion skills whatsoever.

I never said anything against the path you chose to roleplay your character. It's beyond my understanding as to why you are throwing something like "If you dont like it, dont use it" at me.

Bad morals isnt anything Hrolvar is worried about at all. He's a theif and a thug, occasionally a murderer who does whatever he needs to do in search of ultimate knowledge to perfect his craft (blacksmithing/enchanting)

It wouldn't. They don't attack you as a dawnguard vampire, but their behaviors will shut off until you get cured. Become etherial + a quick calm or thrall power should work, after all entering a vendor's screen stops time. a scroll of harmony should also do the trick. Best to take volkhair for a vampire.

I was making an incorrect assumption then, my bad.

All good, all good.

Yeah, might just roll with volkihar.

Hrolvar's Status:

- Switched from two-hand to one-hand
- Guildmaster of the Thieves Guild, having great difficulty in returning the key.
- Mage College, RPing Colette Marence as his primary teacher. (completed hitting the books)
- Owns the Black-Star and uses it quite frequently on bandits.
- Owner of Chillrend.
- Travels with Brelyna Maryon when not doing Thieve's Guild jobs. (supposed to be his best friend?)
- Became a vampire around lvl 13, didnt like it on him...cured within 10 in-game days.
- Just strolled into Dimhollow Crypt after scouting out Dawnguard Keep and accepting Isran's task.
- Depending on how much joy I have killing vamps, might just end up going Dawnguard. (most likely)
