Restoration magic actually worth leveling or just heal spam until you can afford potions?

I'm doing a pure mage run on my first Morrowind playthrough (coming from Skyrim where restoration is basically a joke), and I keep hearing that magic overall works totally different here. Right now I'm just casting the basic heal spell over and over in dungeons and it's tedious as hell. Does Restoration actually get interesting perks later, or should I just accept that healing potions are the move and dump those points elsewhere?

Restoration in Morrowind is genuinely different from Skyrim, but not in the way you're hoping - it's actually less useful overall, which is the real problem. There are no perks that make healing spells suddenly click. The tedium you're feeling isn't a skill issue; it's just how the system works.

That said, don't dump it entirely. The thing Morrowind does better than Skyrim is letting you mix schools. A pure mage run doesn't have to mean you're locked into one playstyle. Restoration gets you access to some solid utility spells - cure disease, cure poison, that kind of thing - which actually matter way more in Morrowind than Skyrim because those status effects are way more punishing. There's also levitation and water-walking spells that live in Restoration, and those are genuinely useful for exploring.

But yeah, for healing specifically? Potions are the move. Alchemy is broken in Morrowind (in a good way), and you can make healing potions that are dirt cheap and way faster than casting. If you're determined to heal with magic, Alteration has the spellshield spells which work better defensively anyway.

My suggestion: level Restoration to whatever threshold unlocks the utility stuff you want, then let it coast. Spend your real effort on Destruction for offense and Alteration for defense + mobility. That's where Morrowind magic actually shines compared to Skyrim's more straightforward spell system.

The previous reply nailed it, but I'd add that the utility spells are actually where Restoration becomes genuinely interesting from a lore perspective. Cure disease especially - in Morrowind you can pick up blight diseases that are a real threat, and having access to that spell means you're not constantly running back to a temple or paying for healing. It's a quality-of-life thing that actually changes how you explore.

That said, if you're coming from Skyrim and expecting magic to feel "powerful," Morrowind's gonna disappoint you no matter what school you pick. Spells have lower base damage, they cost way more to cast, and you miss a lot early on. It's a different philosophy entirely - less "I am a magical god" and more "I am a scholar who happens to know some useful tricks." Once you accept that, it gets better.

The other thing worth knowing: if you do want to lean into healing, Alchemy trivializes it so hard that Restoration becomes almost pointless. But if you're stubborn about it, at least pair it with Alteration's damage reduction spells. Casting a shield spell + letting your magicka regen while enemies whack at you is way more engaging than spam-healing, and it actually uses the game's systems in an interesting way.
