Sabertooth Bandit Leader?

So, I was heading to a bandit camp to kill them all, take their things and collect the bounty. Along the way I met a sabertooth cat and killed it. Immediately after doing so, the quest registered that I had killed the bandit leader. So...after all the bandits that adventurers kill, the bandit market must be really hard-pressed for labor. And for a non-sentient species to raise through the ranks and earn the coveted title of leader! That really is a most impressive step in trans-species relationships. Or maybe he just ate all the bandits and became leader by eating the previous leader.
