18+ Shadow Station

Jessica got back into bed with a big yawn. La'ara soon followed after turning the lights off. She got into bed with Jessica and fell asleep almost immediately, leaving an outstretched hand. After she got settled under the blankets Jessica cuddled up next to La'ara and hugged her tightly before trying to go back to sleep. She knew she was being difficult but she was grateful for La'ara indulging her and she suspected she knew that. Jessica knew she would sleep easier tomorrow than tonight because she had the whole day to get to know and trust three powerful people who could protect her very well. La'ara already felt like a big sister and her presence made Jessica feel safe. Even so, she was a vigilante and that brought some concerns. Jessica knew that some people simply needed to be shot, and she was smart enough to know that there were plenty of them on this station. La'ara seemed to go after these people and that was a good thing but that could bring trouble down on both their heads if they weren't careful. Jessica decided that she needed to help her. This sort of thing is exactly what the Academy trained her to do and she had nowhere else to go, so why not try and mete out some justice where there was none to be found?

Vex seemed like a nice guy and he gave off the air as someone who stood up for whatever he thought was right. Even so, he was a bounty hunter and that meant he could be persuaded to do a great many evils if appropriately incentivized. Marek was certainly a bigger threat in that respect than Vex was, but if he really was a friend of Jessica's parents than there was something good about him. For now, both men seemed to take a liking to her and Vix was smitten with La'ara. Two bounty hunters watching your back in a place like this was never a bad thing.

Cuddling La'ara like a teddy bear, Jessica drifted off to sleep, warm, comfy and finally safe.

Derek noticed the half-Khajiit watching, most likely thinking he was stealthy. In case the man was planning something other than observation, He turned slightly, and tilted his helmet in his direction. "We're not alone" he said softly to the man standing across from him. He turned towards the entrance, "I'll be waiting outside" the chaos in the streets seemed to have calmed down, and people were going about there 'business' with the level of paranoia that was not only normal, but probably healthy on the station.

When I woke up, Jess was gripping my hand and snoring slightly. I smiled, then pried my hand loose gently, and got up. I made a cup of tea myself, for both me and Jess. Then I went back through to the bedroom, shook Jess awake, and held out the mug.

"Morning, Jess. We're going to have to go soon; Vex and Marek will be waiting for us soon."

I made the bed once she had climbed out, and then I got dressed into my bodysuit. I strapped on my guns, and waited by the door for Jess to be ready to go. While I waited, I thought on what to do today. Obviously we'd have to go and see Vex and Marek. Maybe Vex would have something for us to do, but if he didn't, I decided I'd take Jess and Vex to see the Darkstrider, my ship. It was hidden in an unused hangar, so no-one would see us enter or leave. It'd be a good chance to give Jess something to do other than hide and worry.

Avidius dropped the would-be bounty hunter when the piercing noise ceased, and turned to walk out of the apartment. He doubted that man would be going to collect any pay for that kill. Avidius didn't care to make 100% sure with a blaster bolt, however - there were more important things to attend to. It had happened once before for so long as he had been on the station, and with this second occurrence he decided it had become his problem. In his HUD, he opened up an illicit program that he had found swimming around the sea of data that was the Net, which tracked the users of whichever proprietary comm frequency one desired. Avidius had already entered that of the Blackstar Mercs, and was now looking at one nearby on his map.

The man, patrolling a street nearby, seemed unaffected by the abrasive screech. "You!" Avidius called to the man. "Aren't you going to finally do something about that?"

The merc seemed to emanate exasperation, even from behind a helmet; "The situation is under control. Move along."

"Under control, my-" Avidius stopped himself, and turned to walk away. "Sakatal eat you," he muttered. From then, he went about trying to dig up something on the Net, analyzing the sound, taking the occasional break to sleep, keeping with the odd lack of day and night on the Station. There was nothing to be gleaned. Eventually, the Redguard found himself just walking the Station; it was then he ran into another Redguard clad in steel armor. Not sure quite why he chose to ask this one over the others, he said, "You know anything about that noise?"

Xzavier snarled at the remark the man made to his friend. There was disrespect in his voice, he obviously had noticed the assassin, yet had left the situation. It was curious, Xzavier still was interested in just what the subject of their conversation was. Xzavier removed himself from the wall and stepped out of the building after the man. Xzavier took off his mask and lowered his hood, pretending to air himself. He looked about the streets of the shadow station, a common sight for the assassin for the past year.

Aden didn't go back to the Judicator after Jessica left with La'ara. Instead, he discreetly followed the pair through the Station, all the way to an apartment in the middle levels. He watched from a nearby rooftop as La'ara opened the door and let herself and Jessica inside. He assumed it was La'aras own apartment. He stood in the shadows on the roof accros the street for about an hour, until all the lights went out and he was sure that they were asleep. With a few blinks at his HUD, he lowered his rangefinder and activated the scanner feature. At this range it wasn't entirely accurate but it was powerful enough that he was able to make out the faint signatures of two people. Next, he reached into a pouch on his belt and pulled out a small camera dart which he fitted to his gauntlet mounted dart launcher. Lifting his arm he fired the tiny device at the wall directly above the door to the apartment. He left another camera on the rooftop he was on before leaving the area, satisfied that if anybody went in or out of the building, he'd know about it. Jessica would be safe for now.

Leaving the mid level of the Station, Aden entered the maintenance corridors that ran throughout the entire station. They were dark, twisted, dank alleys, with no cameras or bystanders to keep tabs on you. It was a perfect place to go if you needed to get somewhere on the station inconspicuously. Bringing up a scan that he'd done a couple years ago of the tunnels, Aden began walking with the map overlaid on his HUD. He wanted to talk with the Blackstars about that noise he'd heard, if for no other reason than he wanted some details about what the hell that noise had been earlier. If there was any profit to be made through the hunting of whatever or whoever was behind the noises, then he wanted in on it. Through these tunnels Aden could gain access to almost anywhere on the station, including the Blackstars headquarters, which was where he was headed now.

Aden crouched and squeezed through a particularly cramped passage, the tip of his jet-pack mounted missle scraping the ceiling. He'd been in the tunnels for about an hour now, all of it spent looking though the ghostly green, garish filter of his night vision. In some areas, sensors in his suit alerted him to noxious fumes in the air. Every now and then he could hear scrapes off in the distance or the scurrying of a rat in the pipes above his head. Aden certainly wasn't afraid of the dark or of the things that dwelled in it for that matter, but he had to admit that these tunnels had taken on an eerie presence since the last time he had been on Shadow station.

Rounding a corner as per his HUDs directions, Aden came face to face with a heavy steel door that wasn't on his scans. Frowning, he looked over his maps again to see if he'd made a wrong turn. He hadn't. Stepping up to the door he looked for a way through it. After a quick inspection he found a small lever embedded in the steel at the top. With some effort he was able to pry the handle free, producing a loud screech that echoed up and down the corridor. Grimacing, Aden stepped past the door and closed it behind himself before pulling his pistol from its holster and holding vertically near his shoulder. He didn't know what the door had been in place for but by the look of it, it was nothing good. His suit was hardened against all forms of gas and radiation so he was safe from that. He didn't quite know why he had his pistol drawn but something told him it was a wise precaution.

Before he had gone even ten steps past the door, Aden saw that the space he was in now was quite a bit larger than the other tunnels and that it was filled with a dense, steam like fog that prevented his night vision from reaching farther than a few meters. Sighing, he slowly walked forward. Suddenly he heard a loud screech very similar to the one from earlier only slightly less piercing. This one wasn't loud enough for his helmet to block it out but it was just as nerve racking... and it was coming from this room.

Aden Immediately had his pistol lowered and his targeting antenna lowered. He froze, watching the 360 degree camera feed, ready for anything. Or so he thought.
A second scream sounded directly in front of him causing him to aim his pistol just as a massive, hunchbacked figure rushed out of the fog at him. He fired once, twice, three times, each producing a spike in the piercing scream coming from the figure. Before he could get off a fourth shot, the creature lashed out with a huge clawed hand and struck his left side. The hit spun him around and sent him stumbling away from the monster. Ending his spin by rolling sideways Aden ended up on one knee and began firing shot after shot into the fog where the thing had disappeared. He also activated the built in camera in his helmet. Standing, Aden again began moving forward to where he hoped the exit was.

Again, he heard the howl and he saw the shape coming again. He opened up on it, backing away as he did. Looking in the reverse camera he could now see a door behind him. He kept firing, eventually eliciting another scream from the freak. Finally the monster stumbled and fell to the floor. Before he could finnish it off, it looked up at him, three eerie blue eyes staring up at him, screamed once before rolling away and scampering back into the fog. Aden held his aim for another five seconds before finally turning and ripping open the door behind him. Before closing it however, he quickly pulled a small thermal grenade from his belt and tossed it inside. Once the door was closed he backed away and counted to four. The explosion echoed faintly from behind the heavy steel. Turning, Aden began jogging down the corridor while wondering what in the nine hells he'd just seen.

"Morning, Jess. We're going to have to go soon; Vex and Marek will be waiting for us soon."
Jessica felt La'ara's hand gently rubbing her shoulder. She stirred and rolled over onto her back. She was presented with a hot cup of tea which she accepted sleepily. She had slept well but not for as long as she wanted. Last night had been her first chance for real rest in days but she was kept up late enough to where she had only gotten about seven hours of it. She gave a big yawn and slowly got out of bed, reluctant to leave the warm covers. She sat down on the couch, not bothering to get dressed yet, as La'ara made the bed, changed into her bodysuit and strapped on her guns. She soon walked out into the living room and waited by the front door for Jessica to be ready. Even though she was still in her pj's and her hair was a mess. She wasn't the greatest morning person and usually needed at least half an hour to get her brain started. One hour without a shower and some breakfast, neither of which were readily available at the time.
"What time is it?" She asked groggily. "I'm hungry and I really want to go back to bed. Why are you waiting for me by the door anyway? I'm not even dressed yet."
Then she realized how rude that probably sounded.
"Sorry. I'm not the greatest morning person and I'm hungry enough to eat a whole pie. Side effect of the augs. I'll try and finish this up and be ready in a couple of minutes. I'm just behind on my rest and want to go back to bed."

"You're alright. I didn't mean anything by it. VATI, get Jess something to eat before we go."

"At once, ma'am."

A robotic arm emerged from a panel in the wall near Jessica, carrying a full fry-up.

"VATI, that's going to take forever to eat." But it didn't; Jess finished it off within five minutes, and finally appeared to be full. "Right. Come on, Jess. Vex and Marek will be waiting for us, and I have something to show you later on."

Jessica's mouth popped open at the sight of they fry-up laden tray literally being placed in her lap. Everything on here was exactly what she was craving. Bacon, Canadian bacon, sausage, hot baked beans, biscuits, eggs soaked in saracha sauce. Everything she wanted and all in generous quantities. Either VATI could scan human brains for symbolic information, he was accessing Jessica's heavily augmented brain to retrieve the code for what she wanted to eat, or La'ara really loved Full Cyrodillic Breakfasts. The middle option was the most likely but Jessica didn't really care at the moment. What would have taken any well-mannered person at least ten minutes to eat Jessica downed in five, along with a large glass of diet cola to wash it down. She laid down on the couch, sighed contentedly while patting her belly and gave a satisfied burp. Jessica had a huge appetite for such a small girl because her augmentations caused her metabolism to run faster than normal, as well as require much more energy to maintain and replace the trillions of nanites throughout her body. This meant she needed to eat a lot more than usual, as did the rest of her class. Of course, she also loved food and her family had a proud history of big eaters, especially the men.

"Right. Come on, Jess. Vex and Marek will be waiting for us, and I have something to show you later on."

"Okay, just...give me a minute." She yawned in the middle of her sentence and was halfway to going back to sleep. She already had a pillow on the couch, a couple of blankets moved off of the back and onto her and she'd be out.

Vex awoke from a good night's sleep, and then got out of bed. He then made his bed, walked over to the kitchen, and was about to make coffee to start his day. Two files laid on his desk. One was for Maniel, which was closed, then another one which was open, and the pictures were scattered about. The pictures were of bodies, three, to be precise. Most of the time he would stay from this kind of "case", often leaving it to the police. But seeing how this was Shadow Station, there were no official police force. So he decided to do more research on it. Something, or someone were killed these victims in the past couple weeks. But for now, he decided to take singular bounties to hold himself over. After looking through the file, then picking a singular target, the coffee was ready, much to his enjoyment. He put his cup down, then made his usual breakfast. It consists of eggs over medium, bacon, and toast. Most of the time he puts the toast under the eggs. That way he would cut both the eggs and toast. The bacon was always enjoyed separately. After he was done eating, he put the plate up and sat down and went over a check list. Obviously he didn't have his armor on, but that was okay. He made his bed, had breakfast, and was currently drinking his cup. But there was something else.

'What am I forgetting? It's not the bed, I already ate, I still need to put my armor on, but that's not it.' He looked around the room to see if it helped him remember. His comm caught his eye, then he remembered. "Oh! Now I remember. La'ara wanted to meet up with me and Marek. I wonder if she'll call? I don't have the power to know where and when she wants to meet. I guess I'll have to wait for the call. Wouldn't Jessica be there? Most likely in my opinion. I wonder if I scare her? I know I scare my targets, some fellow hunters, people, and even a few officials. It's not like I'm going to be talking non stop. No use thinking about it. Might as well relax until she calls."

I rolled my eyes as Jess began to fall asleep again. I shook her shoulder.

"Come on, Jess. Vex and Marek will be waiting. I'll give Vex a call on the way to make sure, but I don't know how to get hold of Marek. And you're going to want to see what I'm going to show you." I put a tiny earpiece into my right ear, then tapped a few numbers in on my arm-pad. Vex answered. "That bubble place. Where we were yesterday." Vex responded with a grunt, not giving anything away in case someone was listening in, then hung up. I pulled out the earpiece, and led Jess out the door.

In ten minutes we were at the meeting point. Vex was already there, but Marek was nowhere to be seen for now.
"Right, Vex. First, we do what either you or Marek want to do, whether that's hunt down a target together or whatever else. But later on, I need to show at least you and Jess something."

Skylar stepped off of the unassuming Imperial shuttle and walked across the hangar bay with one hand on the grip of her pistol. Behind her, the shuttle boarding ramp hissed closed as the pilot locked down the ship. "I'll keep the ship secure till you're done here. Better keep your safety off ma'am." Athesi's voice crackled in her earpiece. Skylar grinned, "Roger that. I'll check in every few hours." Opening the hangar door, Skylar headed down the corridor leading to what passed for a downtown on Shadow Station. Athesi had a point. In most places, being an Imperial agent meant that you were near untouchable, what you said was law and nobody would question it. Here though, she would get no such treatment. Anybody involved in any type of crime, and that was nearly everybody on Shadow Station, would want her dead if they were to find out what she really was. She had to watch her own back carefully. Luckily for her, being an Agent also meant that it was relatively easy to pretend to be someone you weren't, seeing as she didn't exist anyway. Right now, she was masquerading as a freelance mercenary. Skylar didn't have a specific goal on Shadow Station as of yet. She was simply getting a feel for things right now and half a mind to get on with one of the several merc groups that called the station home. The Blackstars were her first choice. They controlled everything on the station.

As she walked, passing a few hangars on the way, one bay caught her attention. Or rather, the ship occupying the bay did. Taking a few steps back, Skylar stuck her head around the bay door and immediately recognized the ship within. The Judicator... Aden. Whats he doing on Shadow I wonder? She raised an eyebrow in thought. Last she'd heard, Aden Marek had been working a job in the Noxius system. I'll have to pay him a visit sometime and... catch up. Skylar smiled to herself. She and Aden went back a long way, having crossed paths on several instances in the past. He was one of the few people that she thought of as a friend in this galaxy. Someone that she knew didn't care a skeevers backside about her career. In fact, he'd gone out of his way to aid her several times before, and vise versa. Not that he didn't require a little convincing first. With a smirk, Skylar continued down the passage and then through Shadow stations grimy lower districts before making her way upwards to some of the slightly less seedy mid levels. Once there she found the first bar that didn't look like you'd catch rockjoint just by entering the place and sat down in a corner. Ordering a drink, she leaned back and flipped down the small monocular visor over her right eye. Setting the built in camera to scan for anyone wearing the armor of the Blackstars, Skylar relaxed in the seat the best she could and prepared to wait.

"Right, Vex. First, we do what either you or Marek want to do, whether that's hunt down a target together or whatever else. But later on, I need to show at least you and Jess something." Vex was sitting with his feet propped up on the table while flipping a coin. "Hunt a bounty? Is Jessica okay with that? It's quite bloody and violent! Especially this bounty that is now a triple killing that the "authorities" aren't taking care of. I think I'll do that one once I get some more income." Vex then turned his head to Jessica. "How about you Jessica? What do you want to do? I doubt it's chasing a bad guy then kill or capture him. The former can get messy." Vex might have sounded sarcastic, but he was being serious. In the end, it was Jessica's decision alone. "I've just been doing research on any bounty that seems somewhat interesting. Nothing too special. Ironically, I just got a bounty on the bastard who beat and strangled that girl on the news. Horrible thing, that. But for right now, I have a day off. Until a bounty that needs killing comes up. Sorry, Killing or capturing." Vex then got up and brushed himself off. "So, where to?"

Jessica lazily got up off the couch and trotted back to the bedroom. La'ara was impatient so there wouldn't be time for a long shower but she still needed to take one. She was relatively clean from last night but it would help wake her up. She stripped naked and stepped into the warm running water. Then she activated her haste augs to quickly and thoroughly clean her body. The augs were originally designed to let her wield a knife with the speed and accuracy of a vampire but it also let her take one hell of a shower. Soaping, shampooing and rinsing her body at blinding speed she was in and out in four minutes. Then she got dressed into her bodysuit, zipping up her boots afterwards, then pulling on her gloves and strapping on her pistol. The rest of her weapons and gear were split between her void sphere and a pack she had with her and she left all that behind. Her pistol would be enough to get her out of trouble and she was a capable destruction and conjuration mage if that failed.

She lazily followed La'ara to the bubble room from last night where Vex was waiting for them. La'ara declared that they would do whatever Vex wanted to do, then Vex asked Jessica what she wanted to do, obviously concerned with exposing her to the grim wetwork of bounty hunting.

"I'm not sure." She admitted, looking puzzled and concerned at both Vex and La'ara. "On the one hand killing people isn't what I had in mind when I came here. On the other hand that's exactly what I've been trained to do. Both of you probably know about a special school on Theren called The Academy but not what really goes on there. The pristine educational campus everyone sees on the news is only a small part of the greater institution. The skin of the apple really. So far I've killed holos, droids, beasts and monsters but never people. I'm afraid of...what might happen to me if I do."

Her expression turned sad and she lowered her head, looking down at her boots and turning her toes in.

I'm afraid of...what might happen to me if I do." Jessica had a sad look, then glared down at her boots. "Oh I know about the academy. I find it wrong that they train innocent, sweet, kids like you into killing machines. You're first real kill is always the hardest. Unfortunately, it gets easier. It won't change you a lot, if you don't let it. Take bounty hunters, for example. Some love the killing. I personally don't. Sure I like to fight, but killing is different. It's harder, more personal. I'll only kill people that deserve it. But who am I to judge that? I have a feeling you'll be fine. Death is apart of life, especially on this station. Without death, there can be no life." Vex normally wouldn't talk, or give a sermon about things like this, but he felt sorry for Jessica. He wasn't going to be mean and cold to her. She is completely new to all of this. So, He talked to her like he would a little sister, or a child he was to look after. Some of his bounties were just taking care of children. whether if they're in the house around a bad neighborhood, shopping with no parents around, or if he found them when they were lost. He tries to comfort them. It's adults he hates. Well and some spoiled rich brats. Vex padded her shoulder. "Don't worry kiddo, you have us. Just pray you won't have to use that gun or augs. I heard this quote a while back, "True courage is about no knowing when to take a life, but to spare one." I know that all too well. What do you think La'ara? What do you have in mind?" He then returned to his seat.

"You know anything about that noise?" Derek turned, his expression hidden by his helmet. The man speaking to him wore something that resembled the dwarven armour he'd read about in school. More technologically advanced, of course, but still..."Probably as much as you" he said, keeping his voice neutral. He knew it was...unwise to alienate a potential ally, especially on a place like this. "There's one of those Blackstar fellows' in the bar. She might know something, but I wouldn't bet on her telling you anything. As for myself, I'm headed to the lower levels with him" he pointed to the ex-cop who was lounging near the door.

Galen checked his weapons, and nodded, satisfied that they were ready. Heading outside, he noticed a half mer with a sniper rifle of Aldmeri make, and inclined his head cautiously to him. The bounty hunter he'd just allied himself with stood outside, speaking to an armoured man that he didn't recognize. Approaching the bounty hunter, he said "I'm ready when you are" he noticed that the people moving through the streets were much calmer, although the mercenaries were keeping a close eye on the proceedings. 'I doubt things will be half as calm, the lower we get' he reflected, leaning against the bars' outer wall. He could wait for the hunter to conclude his conversation.

I smiled at Vex as he sat back down, then spoke up.
"Right. If neither of you have any particular idea of what to do, I guess I'll show you what I wanted to show you now."

I winked at Jess, who looked at me questioningly, but I tapped my nose and grinned. I led them through an old unused alleyway, that led to an empty, silent area. There was a subtle alcove off to the side, wide enough for two people to walk through side-by-side, but shrouded in darkness. I led them through it, tapped in a code to the door at the end, and took them through to the room on the other side, closing it behind me. It was small, with eight doors on its walls.
"Neither of you can tell anyone about what I'm showing you. If anyone found out about it, it would be destroyed as easily as it got here." Then I entered a code on the second door from the right, and led them into a massive, old hangar that no-one even knew existed any more.

And both of them gasped. My ship, the Darkstrider, was sat inside, its entry hatch at the back opening to let me in. The Darkstrider was enormously powerful; it cost me a hundred thousand septims, and worth every last one. It could reach light-speed as easily as a man could walk. It was really quite large as well; nearly forty feet long, and about twenty feet wide. There was plenty of room inside, and yet it was small enough to go unnoticed in most areas of the galaxy. I smiled at Vex and Jess.
"Impressed? Come on, I'll take you inside."
I took them up the gangway into the ship's interior, letting them roam around to have a look, but having to stop Jess touching any of the weapons systems fairly often. Vex kept his hands to himself, being sensible about it.
"So?" I asked them both. "What do you think?"

"It's impressive, that's for sure. Nice job hiding it, by the way. Must have cost a pretty septim." Vex refrained from pressing any buttons. He had a starship of his own that was well hidden on the station. He didn't plan on telling anybody where it is. at least not yet. 'It's huge, that is for certain. I'm mostly a one to two seater kind of guy. My ship is sleek, powerful, and flies under the radar. No pun intended,' Vex laughed to himself quietly. 'Could this thing have anymore guns? Honestly. If she had a full crew then it would make sense. If it's just her, then it's overkill. Formidable ship either way.' Vex then took note of the guns, "What kind of weapons do you have on here? I'm curious. Must be very versatile." He then turned to Jessica and raised an eyebrow. "Jessica, do try not to get us blown up. I rather like being in one piece."

Jessica felt like one of her fellow teenage girls in a brand new clothing store as she toured La'ara's ship. Everything was state of the art. The weapons, the interior, even the bunk beds. She simply couldn't stop herself from touching the bulging gun racks or examining the ship's weapons control. She wanted to push every single button, engage every system and test every weapons just to see what would happen.

"This. Is. Amazing!" She squealed. "How much power does your reactor generate? How much power does each system run off of? Is power flow automated or do you manually control it? What about your fuel supply? Your hyperdrive? your provisions? How much do you have before having to restock? OOh, are these the weapons controls?! Can I play with them!?"

"Jessica, do try not to get us blown up. I rather like being in one piece." Vex said with an amused but serious expression

"Right, sorry." She said, a bit embarrassed about how annoying she was probably being, but the fact that neither Vex nor La'ara could keep a straight face as Jessica flittered about suggested they thought it was funny or cute. Probably both. She turned to La'ara. "La'ara, they have some nice ships at The Academy, some really nice ones, and I've had the pleasure of working in them, playing in them, getting my hands greasy while working in their guts and studying them. This ship is forge world quality. There must have been a hundred techpriests singing hymns of power and reliability at its construction ceremony. This is...a masterwork of the Machine God."
