Sneaking past dragons is way harder than actually fighting them

I just realized something stupid on my current playthrough. I've been trying to stealth around a dragon at Bleak Falls Barrow because my sneaky archer is only level 12 and I figured I'd just grab the Dragonstone and dip. Spent like 15 minutes crouching behind rocks while the thing circled overhead.

Then I thought, why am I doing this? Just fight it. Took maybe 90 seconds with a bow and the Unrelenting Force shout. Way faster, way less tedious.

I think people talk a lot about "just sneak past enemies" as this universally good strategy but dragons actually punish it hard. They have unlimited vertical space, they spot you constantly, and they don't stay still. A melee enemy or even a mage you can actually hide behind cover from. A dragon just... knows you're there eventually.

Has anyone else noticed the stealth meta just completely breaks against flying enemies? Or am I just bad at sneaking.

Yeah, dragons are basically the one enemy type where stealth legitimately sucks. They've got that detection radius that doesn't care about line of sight the way ground enemies do, and they move in 3D space so your usual rock-hiding tactics are pointless. You're not bad at sneaking - the game's stealth system just wasn't designed around aerial combat.

That said, there are a couple workarounds if you really wanted to avoid fighting. Unrelenting Force actually works great for knocking them out of the sky, which most people use anyway. And if you're in a dungeon with a low ceiling (like Bleak Falls), dragons get way less maneuverable - they'll land more often and you can actually stealth around them. But yeah, for an open-air dragon? Just shooting it is faster every time. The stealth-archer fantasy breaks down pretty hard once you hit flying enemies, and honestly that's fine. Not every playstyle needs to work on everything.

Your level 12 archer probably would've gotten wrecked anyway if the dragon landed on you, so you made the right call switching tactics.
