The more I replay Dragonborn the more I'm convinced Solstheim's layout is deliberately uncomfortable. Everything is cramped, asymmetrical, the paths don't connect the way you'd expect them to. Raven Rock feels like it's been forced into existence on an island that doesn't want it. The Telvanni tower is this awkward vertical maze. Even the landscape itself - those ash-covered wastes, the way the terrain just drops off or gets blocked by invisible walls.
Compare it to Skyrim's holds, which are designed to feel like actual places you can navigate. Solstheim feels like you're always slightly lost, always slightly unwelcome. And I think that's intentional? It's the island that got kicked out of Morrowind's empire, the place where Miraak got stranded, where Hermaeus Mora's influence is literally warping reality through the Black Books. The architecture reflects that - it's wrong in a way that's hard to articulate but impossible to ignore once you notice it.
Anyone else get that vibe or am I reading too much into the level design?
