I just replayed it on my current run and it hits so much harder than I remembered. The way it starts innocent - you're just doing a job for the guards, clearing bandits out of a cave - and then slowly reveals that you've been played the entire time. By the time you're standing in that jail cell, you realize the whole hold's power structure is rotten.
What gets me is that Skyrim never really does this again. Most quests are pretty straightforward. But this one has actual intrigue. The guards lie to you. Thonar and Madanach both manipulate you. Even after you escape (or don't), the consequences actually stick around - the Forsworn stay a threat, the conspiracy keeps bubbling under the surface of Markarth.
Compare that to something like the Thieves Guild questline where you're basically just doing jobs until you're suddenly the leader. The Forsworn Conspiracy actually makes you feel like a pawn in someone else's game, which is way more interesting than being the chosen one for the millionth time.
Anyone else think this quest deserved way more weight in the main story? Like, it should've tied into the Civil War or something. Instead it's just this self-contained thing that most players probably miss entirely.
