I just finished it again on my current playthrough and I honestly think it holds up better than anything else Skyrim has to offer. Not just mechanically - though the prison break section is genuinely tense - but because it's one of the few quests that actually makes you question what's happening instead of just following markers.
You go in thinking you're investigating a murder. By the end you're either complicit in a conspiracy or you've uncovered something genuinely dark about Markarth's power structure. And the game doesn't hold your hand about it. If you miss the context clues, if you don't read the journal or talk to the right people, you can just... do the quest wrong and not even realize it. That's rare in Skyrim.
Plus the followup with No One Escapes Cidhna Mine is the only questline I've seen that actually punishes you for your previous choices in a way that feels earned rather than arbitrary. You can't just load a save and fix it on the same playthrough - you're locked in.
Anyone else find themselves replaying this one more than the "bigger" questlines?
