Vampire Lord perks in ESO actually make Harkon look pathetic

I've been running through some ESO content and honestly the vampire skill line is insane compared to what we get in Dawnguard. Like, Harkon's whole vampire form in Skyrim feels like a glorified bat transformation with a couple damage buffs, but ESO vampires get actual sustained gameplay mechanics. Drain health over time, invisibility, the whole toolkit.

Which makes me wonder - if Harkon had access to even half of ESO's vampire abilities, would the Dawnguard questline actually feel threatening? Right now you can just tank him as a werewolf or a regular melee build and he goes down. But a properly built ESO-style vampire lord would actually be a problem.

Does anyone else feel like Dawnguard kind of undersold what being a vampire should be? I get that Skyrim was already feature-packed but the vampire perks tree feels so thin compared to how much depth ESO gives it.

I think you're comparing two pretty different design philosophies though. ESO's vampire line is built around sustained gameplay loops - you're managing drain, invisibility cooldowns, feeding mechanics across a whole dungeon or PvP encounter. Skyrim's Vampire Lord form is more of a "burst transformation" tool, closer to how Werewolf works. It's not really underselling vampirism so much as making a different bet about what that playstyle should feel like.

That said, yeah, Harkon as a boss is kind of a letdown. The fight itself isn't mechanically interesting - he just stands there and you wail on him. A lot of Dawnguard's boss encounters feel like that honestly. But I don't think giving him an ESO-style drain toolkit would've fixed it. The real problem is that Skyrim's combat doesn't reward defensive play or resource management the way ESO does. You're either standing still casting or you're moving and hitting things. There's not much middle ground for a vampire to occupy.

What would've actually made Harkon threatening is if the fight had more environmental stakes or phase mechanics - force you to manage adds, break line of sight, deal with stage hazards. The vampire abilities are almost secondary to that. A properly designed Harkon encounter could've been scary with vanilla Vampire Lord form if the encounter itself demanded you use those tools instead of just tanking through it.
