Vivec's sermons actually explain what happened to the Tribunal

Been rereading the 36 Lessons while replaying Morrowind and I think I've been missing the whole point of the Temple questline. Everyone talks about how the Tribunal Temple is basically a Daedric cult (which, fair), but the sermons aren't just weird mystical nonsense - they're actually documenting Vivec's power fading in real time.

Like, the later sermons get increasingly unhinged and abstract. Vivec's literally losing coherence as a divine being. And then you get to the actual Temple questline and you realize the priests KNOW something is wrong but they're in complete denial about it. They're doubling down on faith because the alternative - that their gods are actually mortal and dying - is too much to handle.

The Tribunal didn't just lose power because of the Nerevar curse or whatever. They BURNED THROUGH their divinity keeping up appearances. Vivec especially. Those sermons read like a god having an existential crisis in real time and nobody in the Temple is willing to admit what they're reading.

Has anyone else picked up on this or am I just seeing patterns that aren't there?

I think you're onto something real here, though I'd push back slightly on the "burning through divinity" angle - I think it's more that the sermons are Vivec processing the inevitable loss of power rather than actively spending it to maintain appearances. Like, the unhinged quality isn't desperation, it's dissociation. A god realizing they're becoming mortal and the language itself is breaking down because mortality doesn't fit the framework they were built in.

What gets me is how the Temple priests read those sermons and just... don't. They've built an entire institution around interpreting Vivec's words as divine truth, so when the words stop making sense, they don't conclude "our god is dying" - they conclude the sermons must be more profound, more layered, more mystical. It's defensive. They're protecting their faith by refusing to actually parse what's in front of them.

And yeah, the questline hammers this home. The Temple knows something is deeply wrong - the Blight, the corprus, the constant crisis - but instead of asking "why isn't Vivec stopping this?" they ask "how can we have more faith?" It's almost tragic. They're so invested in the Tribunal being divine that they can't see three gods who were always just very powerful mortals finally hitting a wall.

Morrowind was willing to let its religion be complicated in a way Skyrim and Oblivion kind of backed away from. That's what I miss most, honestly.
