I just finished a vampire playthrough and decided to actually use the castle as my base instead of fast traveling out like I always do. And man, it's a nightmare. The layout is confusing, there's no good crafting setup, half the NPCs are hostile if you're not careful, and the alchemy/enchanting stations are tucked away in weird corners. Fort Dawnguard at least has everything organized in one sensible space.
I get that Volkihar is supposed to feel like an ancient, decrepit vampire lair, but there's a difference between atmospheric and just poorly designed for actual habitation. If you're committing to a vampire character, you basically have to ignore your own castle and use a player home instead, which defeats the whole point of siding with Harkon.
Does anyone actually use it as their main base, or am I the only one who finds it tedious?
