Why does Karstaag wreck me but Miraak feels manageable

I just got to the Karstaag fight in the Forgotten Vale (doing the Daedric quest line) and he absolutely demolished me. I was level 42, decent gear, thought I was ready. Got him down to maybe half health before he just... kept hitting me and I couldn't get away. Switched to a ranged build mid-fight, chugged like 20 potions, still died.

Then I fought Miraak a few playthroughs ago and yeah it was tough but I actually won without feeling completely helpless. What's the difference here? Is Karstaag just tuned way harder or am I missing something about how to approach that fight? I don't want to cheese it with shouts or summons if I can't help it, but ngl I'm thinking about just loading a save and trying a totally different strategy because I'm genuinely stuck.

Karstaag's a different beast - he's got way more health than Miraak and hits harder, but the real problem is his frost damage output and that he staggers you constantly. Miraak fights more like a normal boss with phases and breathing room; Karstaag just locks you down and grinds you out.

A couple things that helped me: first, frost resistance is basically mandatory. If you don't have it naturally (Breton, Nord), grab a frost resist potion or enchantment - even 50% makes a huge difference. Second, he's melee-focused, so keeping distance actually matters here. Ranged should work better than you think, but you need to kite him around those pillars in the arena instead of standing still. And honestly, the fight's designed so you're not supposed to just tank it - backing up, healing, repositioning is the intended strategy, not a cheese.

If you want to avoid shouts/summons, frost damage spells or weapons will at least make him take longer to recover from staggers. But if you're at 42 and your gear isn't optimized for this specific fight, reloading and prepping differently (better potions, maybe a frost resist item) is totally fair. Karstaag's one of those fights where going in unprepared just sucks.
