Why does nobody talk about how good Diplomatic Immunity actually is?

I just replayed that quest for the first time in years and man, it's legitimately one of the best designed quests in the game. You're basically doing a heist inside a formal dinner, you've got multiple ways to approach it, the whole thing has actual stakes, and the pacing is perfect. It doesn't overstay its welcome.

Compare that to like half the other main questline stuff and it's night and day. The Greybeards are standing around being cryptic, the Blades are nagging you about dragons, but Diplomatic Immunity actually lets you roleplay. You can sneak, you can pickpocket, you can just walk around and gather intel. I went in as a battlemage this time and talked my way through half of it before things went south, which felt way more satisfying than the usual "sneak archer solves everything" approach.

Also Delphine is actually interesting in that quest before she becomes insufferable later on. Esbern too. They feel like actual people instead of quest markers. The Thalmor assassination plot actually has weight to it because you're standing in the same room as them the whole time, pretending you're not there to ruin their day.

Anyone else think this is criminally underrated or am I just nostalgia-posting?

You're not wrong about the quest design itself - the formal dinner setup does give you breathing room to actually plan instead of just following a waypoint. The multiple approach angles are solid, and yeah, having Delphine and Esbern feel like actual companions in that space rather than quest markers is rare for the main questline.

That said, I think the reason people don't talk about it much is that it's kind of sandwiched between the slog of "go to every Greybeard errand" and then immediately into "the Blades are insufferable about Paarthurnax" territory. Diplomatic Immunity itself is good, but it's surrounded by stuff that makes people tune out the whole main quest. By the time you finish that quest, a lot of players have already checked out mentally.

Also - and maybe this is just me - but the actual stakes feel a bit hollow in hindsight? You're supposed to be assassinating the Thalmor leadership, except you don't really, and then they just... keep existing as a problem that never really resolves. The quest does tension well in the moment, but it doesn't land as hard if you think about what actually happens afterward. Compare that to something like Pieces of the Past or even The Break of Dawn, where the quest's consequences actually ripple through the game.

That battlemage run sounds fun though. The quest definitely rewards you for not just defaulting to stealth, which is more than I can say for most of Skyrim's design.
