Windstad Manor's location is actually perfect if you stop thinking like a completionist

I think people trash Windstad because it's isolated and the nearest town is a trek, but that's exactly why I love it on my current playthrough. There's something about having a homestead that feels genuinely remote - like you're actually building a life away from all the chaos instead of just another house in civilization.

Plus the marshland aesthetic is way underrated. Yeah it's swampy and bleak, but that's kind of the point? My character is a nord who got tired of politics and wanted to disappear. Windstad feels right for that.

Only real downside is the giant attacks can get annoying, but honestly that's a feature not a bug if you're the combat type. Keeps things interesting. And if you don't want constant raids you can always just not build the armory - I think people forget you have control over what gets constructed.

Anyone else actually prefer the isolation or am I just weird about this?

I actually get this. My last playthrough I settled at Windstad too and yeah, once I stopped treating it like a checklist item it felt way better. The isolation does something the other two manors don't - it actually makes the place feel like yours instead of just another convenience.

That said, I think the giant attacks thing gets overstated in a weird way. Like yeah they happen, but they're not constant unless you're actively building up the place. I didn't build the armory on purpose and had maybe two or three giants show up over like 40 hours. Not exactly a war zone. People see "giant attacks can happen" and imagine they're getting raided every five minutes.

The marshland aesthetic point is solid though. Morthal's right there if you need supplies, and there's something about the bleakness that just works for certain character types. My nord was exactly like yours - done with Whiterun politics, wanted to disappear. Windstad fit that vibe perfectly.

Only thing I'd push back on slightly: the isolation is a feature if that's what your character wants. For someone running a stealth archer who wants to be near a city for easy fencing or whatever, yeah it sucks. But that's not a flaw with the location, that's just the player wanting something different. You're right that people default to complaining about it without thinking about whether it actually fits what they're doing.
