I've been trying to write a Redguard OC and I keep falling into this trap where they're just... good at swords. Martial and stoic and that's it. But Redguards have this whole cultural thing going on with the Alik'r, the Crowns vs Forebears split, their relationship to magic, the way they ended up in Skyrim as refugees or mercenaries. And I'm not using any of it.
How do you write a Redguard character who actually feels rooted in their culture without turning them into a lore dump? Like, I want the character to have that background, not to explain it every other scene. Does anyone else struggle with this? I feel like Nord characters are easier because the game just throws Nordic culture at you constantly, but Redguards get sidelined unless you're actively looking for them.
Also curious if anyone's written a Redguard who isn't primarily a warrior. I know they get the Adrenaline Rush ability or whatever, but that doesn't mean they have to swing a greatsword around. What's a Redguard character who uses magic, or stealth, or something unexpected, and still feels authentically Redguard?
