Not quite a hardcore 'no fast travel' playstyle,

Slow Rider

Member
But a limited fast travel. I'm a level 54 sword/board/archer type, finished the main quest, most of the tertiary ones, and have purchased every house available in the game (that I'm aware of). I am only going to allow myself to fast travel between houses I own, and I will no longer ride a horse (sorry Shadowmere, I love you my red-eyed evil horse;), go graze peacefully somewhere) . Any other travel will require me to hoof it on foot, including to other cities in which I don't own property.

I am open to any suggestions with might accentuate this modified playing style, including limiting of certain items and weapons. Like I tell my children, we all learn from each other... happy gaming my friends.

From a long while of playing WoW I have learned that you can't always rely on the game to shove some fun in your face and take it upon yourself. If you are at the point where you need to spice things up, give yourself a challenge. Maybe try to complete a quest with no clothes on, or considering you're a warrior/soldier type; try to complete a quest line for a completely different archetype. Wear clunky plate armor as a Nightingale, just for the fun of it.

Or like shroom head said, you could always reroll.

Well you're already level 54. Why not start over with these limitations in hand?

I dunno. There's something about repeating the main storyline that is just distasteful to me. Not saying I won't do it, but I'm leaning toward artificially skewing the playing field away from my existing player, something on the order of "no health potions, only food" or something like that. That's just an example. I do appreciate your thoughts though. Thanks.

Good ideas. Perhaps I will limit myself to strictly magic. That ought to be a challenge in and of itself, since have clearly neglected that aspect of the character. Just leave the weapons at home and go adventuring... this sounds better the more I think about it. I also love your idea about asymmetry of armor-to-quest. That is something I never considered. Thanks!

I just recently restarted and have avoided the main storyline completely, aside from arriving in Riverwood. I'm currently in my mid 2x levels, pure Mage build with some limitations.

-- Fast travel only via carriage
-- No horse
-- Zero armor rating (made a mistake with the Morokei mask though, didn't realize it was "Light")
-- No bows or any type of weapon (aside from conjured/bound)
-- Smithing only for jewelry
-- No stealing (outside of questlines)
-- No Thieves Guild
-- No Dark Brotherhood
-- Use only followers I previously never used in other playthroughs (developed this rule just recently)
-- No "powerleveling" of skills

I'd like to eventually go through the same restrictions with a Bosmer "Pure" Archer (bow only, ever), Orc/Redguard/Nord Warrior.

There are a few choices to be made along the main storyline too.. did Paarthurnax live? You could re-roll the Civil War also.

Never killed Paarthunax. Delphine and Esbern can go pound sand. Paarthunax is my boy. (does secret Dragon handshake with P. Draggy)

Problem I forsee jumping into Magic at this point of your current character is that you may have neglected adding perks into magic based trees as well as magicka points. You may be limited to two shots of Adept-level spells and then your magicka pool is empty.

Not saying you don't have the willpower to do so, but artificially limiting yourself on your current character, some people will have the tendency to just fall back to their strengths when the going gets rough. Especially since you're facing similarly leveled enemies while trying to take them down using un-buffed magic. If you re-roll with limitations in place, you have no alternative, you have no "safety net" so to speak.

Regardless, post some updates about how it's going, it'd be interesting to read.

I finished all the main quests as well, bought all the houses (except Windhelm ... still unable, dangit), maxed alchemy and enchanting (no cheating, no powerleveling), invested in every business that lets me, have more gold that I could ever spend, and every type of weapon and armor imaginable.

Mostly bow and sneak at this point. I went through a destruction magic phase, but basically just killed any follower who was with me. I like having company, so switched back to weapons.

Anyway, I started off toward the west from Riften on foot recently to get rid of all my miscellaneous quests. Brought along only a bow, a sword, armor, ring, amulet and a few healing potions. Found and hooked up with Ilia, and we've been hoofing it together across the south. I only loot bosses and locked chests, and only take named items.

Whenever a new icon shows up on the compass we head toward it and explore. The plan is to walk along the south and finish up all the bounty quests, turn them in at the respective towns, and go in a somewhat circular route, ending at the Mage's College, where I will turn in the last of my misc quests.

Not sure what after that...
