Illusion magic early game—does it actually help or just delay real damage?

I'm on my second playthrough (level 12, playing on Switch) and grabbed some Illusion spells thinking crowd control would let me survive better. But Muffle and Fury feel like they barely do anything, and I'm burning magicka for what—a few seconds of confusion? Meanwhile my Destruction spells are actually killing stuff. Am I using Illusion wrong, or is it genuinely a trap until you get the better perks?

You're not using it wrong, but you're also hitting the wall where Illusion just doesn't scale well early on. Muffle and Fury are genuinely weak spells—Fury especially burns magicka for what amounts to a distraction, and on Switch where you're probably not min-maxing, it's easy to see why you'd rather just fireball things.

That said, Illusion gets way better once you grab a couple perks. The perk that makes your spells work on higher-level targets is a game-changer (can't remember the exact name but it's in that tree), and there's another one that lets you cast spells silently. Once you have those, spells like Invisibility and Calm become genuinely useful for crowd control and survival, not just delaying damage. Invisibility especially lets you skip fights entirely or reposition, which is better than any damage spell at keeping you alive.

The real issue is you're comparing Illusion to Destruction when you should be comparing it to not dying. A well-timed Calm or Invisibility is way more powerful than it looks on paper. But yeah, if you want pure damage early on, Destruction is the move. You can always circle back to Illusion once you hit like level 20-25 and have the perks to make it actually work.

Yeah, that's the honest take. I'd add though - on Switch especially, you're stuck with vanilla perks, so you're dealing with the baseline Illusion tree which is... rough early. No mods to patch the scaling or add better low-level spells.

The thing people miss is that Illusion isn't a damage school, it's a survival school. Fury is bad because you want enemies confused, not just angry at each other - but Calm actually stops combat cold if it lands. Problem is it doesn't land reliably until you've sunk perks into it. So yeah, you're right to feel like it sucks at level 12. It does, relatively speaking.

If you want to make it work sooner without waiting until 20+, honestly just... don't rely on it solo. Pair it with Destruction. Calm an enemy, then nuke their buddy. Or use Muffle to actually sneak instead of treating it like a combat spell - which is what it's for anyway. The spell isn't failing; you're using it in a role it wasn't designed for.

That said, if pure efficiency matters more than variety, stick with Destruction. There's no shame in that. Illusion becomes legitimately powerful later, but "later" is the operative word. Your instinct that it's a trap early game is basically correct.
