I've been replaying Oblivion after finishing another Skyrim run and I forgot how much the world just feels like it's actively trying to kill you. Not in a "enemies scale with you" way (though yeah that's part of it), but like... you walk into a cave and there's a necromancer with three skeletal archers and you actually have to think about whether you go in or find another route.
Skyrim's dungeons feel safer somehow. Even on higher difficulties, you know what you're getting into most of the time. Oblivion just throws random daedra, spell casters with ridiculous magicka pools, and leveled bandits with enchanted gear at you and expects you to deal with it. Your armor doesn't scale with enemy gear the same way, so a bandit in Oblivion can actually be a threat in a way they're not in Skyrim.
Maybe it's because Oblivion's magic is just more oppressive. A mage in Oblivion can wreck you faster than anything in Skyrim. Skyrim's combat feels more forgiving overall - even the hardest encounters are manageable if you kite and manage stamina. Oblivion doesn't give you that luxury.
Am I just remembering it through nostalgia goggles or does anyone else feel like Oblivion world spaces actually demand more respect?
