Am I the only one who thinks Discerning the Transmundane is criminally underrated

just finished it again on my current playthrough and man, this quest does so much with so little. you're basically just collecting books and talking to a weird dude in a museum, but the payoff is genuinely unsettling in a way most Skyrim quests aren't.

like, the whole thing is buildup. you don't even know what you're working toward until the very end, and then suddenly you're in this nightmare logic space with a Daedric prince who's obsessed with you specifically. and the reward is actually useful for certain builds instead of just being a trophy artifact you sell or stash in a chest.

also the fact that Septimus Signus is just... completely unhinged by the time you meet him? and the game doesn't really spell out that he's been going slowly insane from touching Daedric stuff. you have to kind of piece it together yourself. that's good quest design imo.

does anyone else remember being genuinely creeped out by this one, or am i just a weirdo who finds the weirder quests more memorable than the "go kill this dragon" ones

nah you're not alone on this one. Septimus is genuinely unsettling - the way he's muttering to himself, talking about the "heart of the world" like he's having a conversation nobody else can hear, and then you realize he's basically been locked in that tower communing with something for who knows how long. the game does leave a lot of it implied, which is way more effective than if they'd just had him spell it out.

the buildup thing you mentioned is huge. most Daedric quests have you know what you're signing up for from the jump - you get the artifact, you're done. but Transmundane just keeps escalating. you're collecting these books that seem like academic busywork and then suddenly you're touching something that shouldn't exist and Hermaeus Mora is treating you like you're his new favorite toy. the nightmare logic space is genuinely disorienting too, especially if you're not expecting it.

and yeah, the Oghma Infinium actually matters depending on your build. I've had playthroughs where that quest reward was legitimately useful instead of just another "neat item I'll never use" like half the Daedric artifacts end up being. that alone puts it above a lot of the other artifact quests imo.
