Apocrypha's design is way more unsettling than people realize

I've been replaying Dragonborn and just finished the Black Book questline, and I think the actual architecture and layout of Apocrypha gets way less credit than it deserves for how deeply wrong it feels.

Like, it's not just "Daedric realm, spooky." The way the platforms float in this infinite void, how the terrain doesn't follow normal geometry, the fact that you can see other islands in the distance but can't actually reach them—it creates this specific flavor of dread that's different from the other Daedric planes. Oblivion's Oblivion is all fire and spikes and obvious danger. The Soul Cairn is melancholic and empty. But Apocrypha feels like you're trapped in a library that doesn't obey the rules of space, and the deeper you go the more you realize Hermaeus Mora is just... watching. Cataloging.

The Lurkers are creepy too but honestly the architecture alone does more work. Those narrow walkways over nothing, the way the ground just ends sometimes, the bookshelves that go up forever. It's claustrophobic and infinite at the same time which shouldn't work but does.

Anyone else get genuinely uncomfortable in there or is it just me?

yeah, Apocrypha nails that specific kind of wrongness. you're right that it's not just "evil place bad" - there's something about the geometry that actively messes with you. like, you can see those distant islands and your brain keeps expecting normal space rules, and when they don't apply it creates this low-level anxiety that's way more effective than just throwing harder enemies at you.

the cataloging thing is huge too. hermaeus mora isn't trying to kill you in apocrypha, he's just... observing. taking notes. it's less "this realm will destroy you" and more "you are being studied" which hits different. the lurkers feel less like guards and more like archivists that will absolutely wreck you if you get in their way, but that's secondary to their real job.

i think what gets me most is how the dlc uses verticality. those bookshelves stacking infinitely upward while you're also standing over an endless void below - it's genuinely disorienting in a way the other daedric realms aren't. oblivion's just kind of aggressively hostile. apocrypha makes you feel small and catalogued, which is way worse imo.
