Do you feel bad for not splitting your gold with followers

I had never really thought much of it in the past myself, happily using them as glorified pack mules, keeping all the gains and tossing them an upgrade here and there.

That is until I encountered a book titled "A Hypothetical Treachery" in game... Now I feel a little bad, and somewhat paranoid. How well do you really know your follower? Roleplay wise I'd be more than a little nervous if I treated them like that. Then, thinking back I remember serana has happily started fights, and killed an armored troll and husky that was with us. Also, I seem to recall having bad experiences giving followers staves with fireball. Do you think it was all merely accidental after reading this book? ;)
 
I'm not sure if she still does, but she used to accidentally have some friendly fire issues with a drain I think. Such as accidentally infecting you and hurting them, causing them to start fighting each other. Had some issues with her and companion mods too. :)
 
I always keep my followers hooked up, even when I'm not using them. I think it's cool to run into them casually and see them putting their gift gear to good use.
 
I have Kharjo with me at the moment I have had him as a follower for 50ish hours, when we first started out I gave him a wage 10% of all gold I make goes to him but as time went on and he saved my life more times than I would care to remember, I looked around and saw I had 8 houses a wife 2 kids I am rich, Kharjo has nothing he is now on 25% off all gold I make and he is due another pay rise soon, I also give him amazing armor as presents and made 3 brotherhood rings (we are in the order of Talos a brotherhood) one for me him and another guy I have used as follower, Kharjo is my best friend and when he gets to old to fight anymore I will keep him safe maybe make him a steward at the home I haven't made yet, he wont serve me as a steward no I make him a steward so he will stay in the house, the house will be my departing gift to an old friend, It will be his house not mine and I will decorate it with rare items, eye of falmer etc he loves bees so I will get him the statue of the bee and the bee in a jar aswell as birthday and xmas gifts off course. (this is my roleplay)
 
Nope, dont feel mean at all, just think they would all be chewing on that endless piece of bread getting fat and bored if it wasnt for me taking them on adventures and spicing there lives up, so yeh it my gold, my little precious, me like the precious gold
 
A few things: First of all, I do share gold with some of my followers, specifically Mercenaries like Belrand, and Jenassa, though they never spend it. OOC, I sometimes do shopping for them, which brings me to my other point. In Game mechanics, Gold doesn't do you a dang bit of good if you never even talk to Shoppe Keepers, and other vendors because you happen to be an NPC. Therefore, you can share some of the other things you get from Loot, like Weapons, Armor, Staffs, Scrolls, and Potions. What where you planning on spending all that money on any way. Crafting? there's something else you can share the proceeds with that are a lot more practical than a sachel of coins that are too light to even kosh someone over the head with...
 
Nope. They have free run of my house in Whiterun. Let 'em get a job since I don't ever take them with me. The only one that complains is the damned housecarl I've had since level one.
 
The last thing I want to do is give any amount of coin to a follower. They're adventuring with the legendary Dragonborn. I think that's payment enough.

For about six seconds.

But if I was to roleplay, yeah, I would definitely give my followers a cut. He's lazy, so he appreciates the help.
 
I usually deck my followers in way better gear than I use, especially at lower levels. I share extravagant weapons & armors with my followers so they don't die! :D

I assume, like Psi pointed out, that since minions don't spend money, if they have been following me any length of time, they greatly appreciate the amazing and magical trophies they receive as wages.

Hey! Where'd you get my housecarl. I hate her. complain, complain, complain... I think I'll take her on my next Dwemer mission and let get herself killed. Of course that would probably piss off the Jarl.
 
I took all of Varkas and Feandal's gold from them after I paid for their lessons, so I got my money back. And since the 1.9 update allows me to go back to level 15 in those skills, I get to do it again!

Anyway, for all we know, our followers could be hording gold from us. I mean, we can't take off their default costumes, so they've probably got a secret wallet that we can't access as well.

Kinds of ruins it though, doesn't it? I think I'll look for an "Old Lydia Dialogue" mod just so I can keep complaining about her ;)

Whenever I get done with a follower, as long as they've served me well, I take them back to their home, give them a nice set of improved weapons an armor, a set of clothes with (if I'm doing enchanting) some appropriate buffs, and a small sack of gold. While adventuring I keep them in a steady supply of great gear and potions. I don't give them gold while adventuring, because as others have said they don't spend it anyway.

If they HAVEN'T served me well, I give their lifeless body a swift kick in the arse as it slides off the nearest mountain. See ya!
 
Personally I don't use any followers I'm a lone cat... and stealth play-style doesn't go well with having followers. But I think that rather than giving them money it's better to give them something that they can actually use. Like giving them potions, food, armors and weapons like many of you already doing this. :)
