OOC Heart of Darkness

So, this is probably an odd first post (hi, I guess!), but I'd like to join this RP. I've done a fair bit of forum RP before, just not here. I could dig up a sample if you'd like, but I have a character write-up ready to go. You mention character diversity? One slightly-used battlemage, coming up:

Fitzroy Arthe

Background
Fitzroy was born under the sign of the warrior, and brought up in a small town in High Rock. He never doubted he’d be a soldier, and when he came of age, he joined the imperial legion, with a belly full of fire and eyes full of patriotic zeal. His talent for magic was discovered early - as a breton it was almost expected - and he was sent to Cyrodiil to train as a battlemage. Battlemage Arthe served the legion faithfully for decades. Though he grew numb to the violence, and weary of killing, he pressed on, secure in the knowledge that he fought for the peace and prosperity of all the provinces. The fourth era was not a peaceful one; the Empire needed him. Besides that, he was a soldier’s soldier, and had never known another life.

His faith in the Empire would not be broken until the Great War with the Aldmeri Dominion. The fighting was more vicious, and the combatants more desperate than he had ever known. He lost count of the young elves that died beneath his fire and ice. And when the dust settled, all that had come from all that death was the White Gold Concordat - almost as bad as capitulation. Fitzroy’s faith in the Legion wasn’t shattered - but it was burnt out, eroded, and gone. He took his pension, and mustered out.

Unfortunately, retirement ill-suited Fitzroy Arthe; he bought land, but it brought him no joy. He drunk himself half to death. He maintained, more or less, his fitness with Legion routine and practice, but more from habit and boredom than anything else. He grew bitter, and aimless.

His short and joyless retirement was ended the day the Vigilant of Stendarr came to his town. A cheerful, cocky young dunmer, who needed directions to one of the nearby ruins, and a suspected daedra cult. Fitzroy donned his armor, offering to show the Vigilant the way. By day’s end, they had fought side by side and been victorious. The dunmer - perhaps sensing that Fitzroy was a man in desperate need of a cause - offered him a place in the Vigil. Though he’s not well-liked (he’s something of a loose cannon, checking in with his superiors with increasing infrequency) Fitzroy has served the Vigil ever since.

Appearance
Though rather old, Fitzroy is still hale, and still strong enough to bear his armor; he’s not particularly tall, but is solidly built. Otherwise, age hasn’t been kind of him; his face is weathered, lined, and scarred. As a young man, long ago, he might have been handsome; he has a strong jaw, and a good nose, now crooked from being broken one too many times. His habitual stubble is grey, like the rest of his hair, which is balding on top; lank, and not quite shoulder length otherwise.

His movement are a little slow and stiff with age; in particular, he has a stiff, straight-legged gait from too many hours marching in heavy plate. He can still move fast enough in a fight (though generally regrets it later) but definitely shows his age.

Skills and Gear
Fitzroy is an accomplished battlemage. He’s not much of a scholar, and his talent with magic was only ever moderate. However, he’s had decades to hone and practice his skill, and can sling fire, ice, and all manner of destruction with the best of them. As a battlefield mage, he also has some degree of skill and training with wards and dispelling magic. He has little to no skill in the other schools of magic.

Otherwise, he’s good with his fists, and wears his armor like a second skin; heavy steel plate, no-frills, but well made. He wears a hood and partial robes over it. He carries a legion short sword, but has little skill with it. It’s more a tool than a weapon to him, and he’d be better off using his armored fists, and prefers to keep his hands free for spellwork in any case.

Decades of experience, combat and otherwise, make Fitzroy a substantial, if eclectic, source of knowledge.

Personality
On the surface, Fitzroy is a grumpy, ornery, tired, and impatient old coot. That probably goes for the next few layers down, too. He’s tired of fighting, tired of needless death, and tired of young idiots trying to get themselves killed. Unfortunately for him, fighting is all he’s good at, and there’s no shortage of young heroes willing to hurl themselves into danger, as far as he can tell. He can’t change the way things are; he does his best not to care.

His problem is that deep down, he does care. He desperately wants to do something worthwhile before he dies; to do some genuine good that might give some sense of worth to his years of seemingly pointless service in the legion. And while he’s desensitized to violence and death to a shocking degree, he really is sick of needless death. He’s slow to use lethal force, at least on people. Once fighting in earnest, though, he doesn’t hold back.

Sky, Geel, you're both very welcome and of course I could save you a spot, Geel. :D

Revoke, very articulate and interesting post. You're definitely welcome.

Cool, thanks. I'm at GMT+10 here in Queensland, so my posting times could be a bit odd, but I'll try and keep up anyway. Looking forward to seeing how this goes!

So I plan on getting the RP thread up as soon as Geel gets his character card posted. I'll let recruiting stay open for a little bit during the opening of the RP.

It appears as if I'm keeping you up. I will be done with my character card later today, so why don't you guys start first? (Introduce your character and all) It'll barely be a few posts for me to catch up on

If you're sure, I don't want to leave you too far behind. What ideas have you come up with so far? I'm getting to work on a RP thread right now.

I'll let the others approach first. Sorex lives in Anvil, but I'm a little unsure on how to have him approach Alistar. <- Scratch that.

Probably for the best that someone started by talking! Wasn't quite sure how to approach this - Fitz isn't terribly social - so I just had him stomp in and make a spectacle of himself. At least that way you guys have something to work with.

Occurs to me to mention, for Sky's benefit: despite being a Vigilant, the whole summoning/necromancy thing isn't a deal-breaker. My character is not at all overzealous when it comes to spellcasters. I mean, it'll still be a thing...but, it'll be a source of interparty friction (and so an interesting plot device), not a party-self-destruct button. So no worries, in short!

Name: Dan-Zaw

Appearance: Grim of face and weathered of scale, Dan-Zaw has stressed his body to the limit on countless occasions, his physical being testimonial to the trials he has been through. His skin is dull and tattered and shoulders hunched with the burden of problems that he has carried through his life.

Dan-Zaw has given up material comfort in return for practicality, donning a pair of pants and scarf. He carries about his few possessions in pouches that he slings upon his back and arms, allowing easy movement and transportation. The only item not stored within these pouches is his illusion staff, strapped onto his back. Dan-Zaw's staff serves as his weapon, travelling stick and something(Or in his opinion, someone) to share his worries with.

History: Once a pirate on the shores of the Blackmarsh, Dan-Zaw raided and plundered neighboring continents for gold, often killing to get to his goal. He was at peace with his life, and despite the ever growing amount of blood on his hands, he never thought that there was anything wrong to living in such a manner. He believed that similar to how Soldiers killed for their job, he would kill for his. It was then that he found the world worth living for.

But when his name entered the gossip of the inns, among many other tales of bloodshed and chaos, he began to doubt. Had his whole life been one whole wrongdoing? The other tales were filled with content so horrific, a better crowd would have shunned and shushed them. To have Dan-Zaw's own story told in a similar manner frightened even him. Dan-Zaw never thought he was ever "evil",always assuming that his kills were justified by supporting his family. Similar to how Dan-Zaw would have feared working beside such attrocities, he also feared how his tale was being told alongside them.

What shook him further was that soon his name was on the wanted list, and not with the names of the casual street thief; Rogue Shadowscales, Renowned hitmen-It made him grim to think that he had killed to that level. While others of his own line of work congratulated him, it made him worry for the safety of his family, and even for those he met in his life- Many were definitely cursed to have met him.

It disturbed him enough to leave the lands in self-exile, following the strict code of non-killing. He ate only nuts and berries, throwing aside the sword and shield in favor of peace. However, he knew this would not last; One could never truly leave piracy behind, and many pirates did not favor his decision. He also needed a method to support his family.

As a result, Dan-Zaw took up the art of illusion, training himself to manipulate the feelings of others. Bandits and thugs would fall prey to each other rather than he to them, and offering his skills as an illusionist-based sellsword ensured the survival of his family. There was to be no more blood on his hands,no more kills- but no longer did Dan-Zaw believe himself a good man anymore, his actions no longer justified by the keeping of the family he left behind. When his contract with his latest employer was over, Dan-Zaw left to High Rock, hoping to find a new contract.

Personality: Once vulgar yet lively, Dan-Zaw has changed drastically over the events. Now gaunt and grim, Dan-Zaw finds little enjoyment in life. He has taken burden of the deaths he has caused square upon his own shoulders, unwilling to forget the past he left behind. Dan-Zaw believes in "the end justifies the means", and excluding murder, will not hesitate to use less morally upright methods to achieve his goal

I'm going to add the artworks later.

Very interesting character, Geel. The whole no-killing aspect sounds like it'd lead to interesting scenarios. As always, great writing as well. :D

Wait, that second part about the shield was Alistar's thoughts. Sorry for not clarifying but when I use italics like that its inner thoughts.

Oh, now I see what you guys mean. Sorry, forgot about the little segment where Bornir asks to sit down at the table when I posted. I'll make some edits.

Made some edits, Bornir, I changed the color of your dialogue in my post just so we wouldn't get mixed up. Do you think you could change colors for dialogue?

Just thought I'd quote you to let you know I got your message.

Didn't realize til too late my first post turned into a Magical Rant against the Vigilants of Stendarr. Oh well, Edwyn probably wouldn't like ol' Fitzroy anyway I suppose.
