So, this is probably an odd first post (hi, I guess!), but I'd like to join this RP. I've done a fair bit of forum RP before, just not here. I could dig up a sample if you'd like, but I have a character write-up ready to go. You mention character diversity? One slightly-used battlemage, coming up:
Fitzroy Arthe
Background
Fitzroy was born under the sign of the warrior, and brought up in a small town in High Rock. He never doubted he’d be a soldier, and when he came of age, he joined the imperial legion, with a belly full of fire and eyes full of patriotic zeal. His talent for magic was discovered early - as a breton it was almost expected - and he was sent to Cyrodiil to train as a battlemage. Battlemage Arthe served the legion faithfully for decades. Though he grew numb to the violence, and weary of killing, he pressed on, secure in the knowledge that he fought for the peace and prosperity of all the provinces. The fourth era was not a peaceful one; the Empire needed him. Besides that, he was a soldier’s soldier, and had never known another life.
His faith in the Empire would not be broken until the Great War with the Aldmeri Dominion. The fighting was more vicious, and the combatants more desperate than he had ever known. He lost count of the young elves that died beneath his fire and ice. And when the dust settled, all that had come from all that death was the White Gold Concordat - almost as bad as capitulation. Fitzroy’s faith in the Legion wasn’t shattered - but it was burnt out, eroded, and gone. He took his pension, and mustered out.
Unfortunately, retirement ill-suited Fitzroy Arthe; he bought land, but it brought him no joy. He drunk himself half to death. He maintained, more or less, his fitness with Legion routine and practice, but more from habit and boredom than anything else. He grew bitter, and aimless.
His short and joyless retirement was ended the day the Vigilant of Stendarr came to his town. A cheerful, cocky young dunmer, who needed directions to one of the nearby ruins, and a suspected daedra cult. Fitzroy donned his armor, offering to show the Vigilant the way. By day’s end, they had fought side by side and been victorious. The dunmer - perhaps sensing that Fitzroy was a man in desperate need of a cause - offered him a place in the Vigil. Though he’s not well-liked (he’s something of a loose cannon, checking in with his superiors with increasing infrequency) Fitzroy has served the Vigil ever since.
Appearance
Though rather old, Fitzroy is still hale, and still strong enough to bear his armor; he’s not particularly tall, but is solidly built. Otherwise, age hasn’t been kind of him; his face is weathered, lined, and scarred. As a young man, long ago, he might have been handsome; he has a strong jaw, and a good nose, now crooked from being broken one too many times. His habitual stubble is grey, like the rest of his hair, which is balding on top; lank, and not quite shoulder length otherwise.
His movement are a little slow and stiff with age; in particular, he has a stiff, straight-legged gait from too many hours marching in heavy plate. He can still move fast enough in a fight (though generally regrets it later) but definitely shows his age.
Skills and Gear
Fitzroy is an accomplished battlemage. He’s not much of a scholar, and his talent with magic was only ever moderate. However, he’s had decades to hone and practice his skill, and can sling fire, ice, and all manner of destruction with the best of them. As a battlefield mage, he also has some degree of skill and training with wards and dispelling magic. He has little to no skill in the other schools of magic.
Otherwise, he’s good with his fists, and wears his armor like a second skin; heavy steel plate, no-frills, but well made. He wears a hood and partial robes over it. He carries a legion short sword, but has little skill with it. It’s more a tool than a weapon to him, and he’d be better off using his armored fists, and prefers to keep his hands free for spellwork in any case.
Decades of experience, combat and otherwise, make Fitzroy a substantial, if eclectic, source of knowledge.
Personality
On the surface, Fitzroy is a grumpy, ornery, tired, and impatient old coot. That probably goes for the next few layers down, too. He’s tired of fighting, tired of needless death, and tired of young idiots trying to get themselves killed. Unfortunately for him, fighting is all he’s good at, and there’s no shortage of young heroes willing to hurl themselves into danger, as far as he can tell. He can’t change the way things are; he does his best not to care.
His problem is that deep down, he does care. He desperately wants to do something worthwhile before he dies; to do some genuine good that might give some sense of worth to his years of seemingly pointless service in the legion. And while he’s desensitized to violence and death to a shocking degree, he really is sick of needless death. He’s slow to use lethal force, at least on people. Once fighting in earnest, though, he doesn’t hold back.
