Hearthfire house layouts are genuinely terrible and it's wild nobody complains

I'm on my third playthrough building out Lakeview Manor and I just realized how badly designed these houses are. Like, the bedroom is upstairs but the kitchen is in the basement? You're hauling food and ingredients down two flights of stairs every time you cook. And don't even get me started on how the alchemy lab is somehow in a completely separate wing from the storage.

Compare that to any of the player homes you can buy in the holds - Breezehome, the Drunken Huntsman apartment, whatever - and they're actually laid out like people live in them. But Hearthfire? It feels like you're building a mansion designed by someone who's never actually prepared a meal in their life.

The worst part is that once you're committed to building it up you're stuck with it. You can't rearrange rooms or anything. Just... inefficient floor plans forever.

Am I the only one who finds this frustrating or does everyone else just roleplay around it?

I get the frustration but honestly I think you're overthinking it a bit. Yeah the layout is weird if you're min-maxing your daily routine, but Skyrim player homes in general aren't really designed around "realistic workflow" - they're designed around giving you a bunch of separate themed spaces to fill with stuff.

Like, Breezehome isn't actually convenient either if you think about it. The alchemy lab is still separate from the bedroom, you're walking across the house to do anything. It just feels less jarring because it's all compressed into one small building instead of spread across multiple wings. But the actual inefficiency is still there.

I think the real issue with Hearthfire is that it costs so much time and gold to build out that you feel locked in once you commit, whereas the hold houses are cheap and small enough that the layout doesn't matter as much. You're not spending hours gathering materials to add a bedroom to Breezehome, you know? The frustration isn't really the layout, it's the sunk cost.

That said if the layout genuinely bothers you on Switch there's not much you can do, but PC players have mods that let you rearrange stuff or add new room layouts entirely. Not saying you should feel obligated to use them - just noting that the community clearly felt the same way you do.
