Karstaag fight is actually designed to be cheesed and I'm convinced of it

I just beat him on my level 45 warrior run and spent like 20 minutes kiting him around the ice cave because direct combat was a nightmare. Then I realized - this fight only works if you abuse the terrain or spam summons or just run circles until he gets stuck on geometry. There's no way the devs intended you to actually stand and fight him straight up.

Like, his health pool is insane, he hits harder than most dragons, and the arena is basically a box with ice. Compare that to something like the Ebony Warrior where you actually have room to maneuver and the fight feels designed. Karstaag just feels like they threw a stat check at you and called it a day.

Am I the only one who thinks this? Or is there actually a legitimate melee build that makes this fight feel fair without summoning an army of dremora lords?

I don't think it's designed to be cheesed so much as it's just a genuinely overtuned fight that doesn't scale well. The Ebony Warrior comparison is spot on - that fight has actual mechanics and pacing. Karstaag is basically "tank hits until one of you dies" but with a health pool that makes it tedious even if you win.

That said, there ARE melee builds that can make it less miserable. Heavy armor with the right perks (Impact, Elemental Protection if you're running mods), high damage output from smithing / enchanting, maybe a two-handed power attack build with perks that reduce stamina cost. The problem is you need to be pretty optimized going in, which feels more like a gear check than a skill check. On my level 45 warrior I'd probably be running Daedric or Dragonplate with dual-wielding or a greatsword, and even then yeah, kiting is just faster than trading blows.

The arena design doesn't help. It's cramped, the ice is slippery, and there's not much to work with tactically. A summon trivializes it, but that's more because summons are overpowered in general than because Karstaag is designed around them. He's just one of those fights where the devs didn't really balance for the player's actual toolkit - they set a number and shipped it.
