Nord Refugee Character Diary - Hrisskar III

- 12th of Frostfall, 4E 202 -

Another thirty steel arrows wasn't enough to bring down the man. Is he a god?

From dawn until dusk yesterday I snuck around in the ruins, firing one arrow after another. My patience was tested throughout the day. The process was slow and tedious, and quite dangerous. Yet my foe still lives and breathes despite the fury inside me right now.

So I returned last night to the inn, and slept a fitful sleep. I awoke this morning with a new idea. I would hire some help. But it turns out there was no one at the inn willing to accompany me for a price. I even sat around all morning to see if any takers would come along. None.

So I'm going to have to leave Falkreath and find my help somewhere else. I'm thinking Riverwood, as it's the closest town I know of with an inn. I only hope there is someone there willing to fight with me.

- 13th of Frostfall, 4E 202 -

The gods are against me. I don't know what I've done. Or what I haven't done. But the gods are definitely working against me. No only was my trip to Riverwood unsuccessful, but my subsequent trip to Whiterun was also fruitless. It seems I can't find anyone in Skyrim willing to fight beside me for some coin.

What to do next. I could head to Windhelm and check at the inn there. But it's another day's ride away. Any mercenary worth their gold is going to charge me at least five hundred gold per day, so I would be paying that fee just for a day of travel.

I could probably find a mercenary in Solitude, but that's even farther away.

Perhaps it's time to venture into a different ruin.

I just don't like feeling like I'm giving up. It doesn't sit well with me. But am I willing to put up a thousand gold or more just to make myself feel better? Probably.

RESTRICTIONS UPDATE:

I am now regarding a mercenary's fee as covering 1 day of service. After that day I must release the mercenary. At that time I may contract their services again for the price they ask. I am no longer responsible for covering their meals for that day as it is considered part of their fee.

You haven't hired Jenassa yet, have you? She's a ranger - uses dual-wielding and archery and imo, is a pretty good fighter. Check out The Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun.

As I was about to leave Whiterun in a frustrated fit, a local gave me a tip about where I could find a mercenary looking for work. So I headed over to the Drunken Huntsman and found a woman who seemed fairly confident in her skills of .. well .. painting the landscape with blood. With no other options readily at hand, I hired her on the spot.

But we still had to travel from Whiterun to Falkreath, and then up the mountain to the ruins and inside to where my immortal foe awaits. I only had Jenassa's services for a day, and I was worried that it might take that long just to reach Falkreath.

I wasn't mistaken. If the gods could have thrown anything else in our path I don't know what it would have been. We fought a dragon, a bear, a grumpy barbarian with an oversized ego, several spiders and a breton battlemage. And while we were in the middle of all of this, while Dawn was safely tucked out of harm's way, she managed to kill a wolf on her own. It was quite a day for all of us.

So when we limped into Falkreath at dusk last night, I knew there was no way we had the energy to push up to the ruins and fight through the night. We needed food and rest.

Now when we awoke this morning my paid friend should have bid me farewell, but I had already arranged a deal to retain her services for another day. You see, her fee is five hundred gold per day. When we had met she carried an old iron sword and an old iron dagger, and she had no helmet.

On our way to Falkreath, while we were passing through Riverwood and before anything had attacked us on the road, I purchased her a very nice dwarven sword to replace her iron sword with. She was pleased with it and I made it clear it was my gift to her. I also knew it would help me in the fight ahead.

But after all of the fighting the rest of the day I was also able to give her a very nice dwarven helmet, taken from the overzealous barbarian, and a steel dagger from the dead breton. He also had a very nice ring, which I also gave to her. The value of my gifts totaled over five hundred septims, and we came to the agreement that in return she would stay with me for one more day.

Today is that day, and today we test ourselves against a man who refuses to die.

More great entries!

And I'm starting to think maybe Hrisskar is becoming a bit reckless, he would of never taken such chances a few months ago. Or it might just be my imagination.

NNnnnooooo!!! I've caught up! What am I supposed to do while I'm at work now? :P

Seriously though, this has been a fantastic read. You're writing style is really captivating! I look forward to reading more in future!

I think he goes through phases. There are times where he is really cautious, and then there are times where he throws that caution to the wind and just goes for it. d;-)

I guess you'll have to work, lol. No, actually, I have a pretty good entry coming later today I think. Hang in there! Thanks for the compliment on my writing. Glad you enjoy!

I'm so excited I can hardly write. My decision to find a hired sword was a good one, despite the cost.

Jenassa and I headed into the ruins this morning and made our way to the source of my frustrations. He was standing there, just as I had described him to my companion, reading a book and looking very ordinary. I assured her once again that he was anything but ordinary, and that either one of us could be dead within the next several minutes if we weren't careful.

The plan was pretty simple. I would strike him with an arrow before he was aware of our presence, and then we would move in and take him by melee.

My arrow struck home and in we went, weapons at the ready. The robed devil lit up his hands with magic and began to blast us with shards of ice and bolts of lightning. We charged right through the pain of his magic and attacked him from opposite sides with our weapons. The man focused his attacks on me at this point, and within a very short time I could feel my life slipping away. But I had a plan for that as well.

I shouted a single word and rendered myself temporarily invincible. During this time I was also not able to strike back, but that was fine. The man continued to attack me, now with his sword, while Jenassa struck at his back repeatedly with her sword and dagger.

I only had a short time before the effect of my shout would wear off, so I quickly stowed my mace and my shield and found the three flasks I had kept at the ready. Two were potions of vigorous healing, and I downed them first. The third was a potion of paralysis I had been carrying for quite some time, and now was it's time to act. I poured the flask over my mace just as the shout effect wore off.

With Jenassa swinging away from the opposite side, I readied my mace as quickly as I could and struck the man. The paralysis poison was about to make sure this fight went our way. But with great surprise I instantly realized that the poison had not had any effect on it's victim!

Now I felt the panic coming again. This man seemed immune to everything from shouts to arrows to poison. Was he indeed a god? Were our efforts futile?

It didn't matter. There was no point in trying to flee now. We were committed to the fight, live or die. And so the battle raged. The clashing of weapons and armor mixed with cries of pain and grunts of effort, to produce a sinister sort of music. The music was ended with a heavy blow from my mace that caught the man perfectly in the side of his head. The fight was over .. and I almost couldn't believe it.

It was then that I realized I was nearly dead myself. I could barely see from all of the blood in my eyes and my pulse was pounding and blurring my vision greatly. Another moment or two in that fray and I would have been gone for certain.

Upon examining the man we discovered he was a vampire .. a master vampire, in fact. This explained why so many things had such minimal effect .. or no effect .. on him. We were lucky to be alive, and felt every bit that way.

I was exhausted, and hurting, and I was ready to go back to Falkreath for the night to recover. But there was a winding staircase just ahead, and I still wondered if I might find a word wall in this place. I also only had Jenassa's services for a bit longer, and it made since to continue with her rather than without her. After all, there could be more of these vampires present.

So we headed up the rickety wooden steps, and the higher we went the more I felt the tension building. Something was close, and I could feel it. Even Jenassa made a comment about the evil in this place. But we continued upward, our weapons ready for whatever lie ahead.

And we came to large room with statues on either side. I heard a commotion at the end, which sounded distinctly like a stone coffin being thrown open. And sure enough, a moment later I spotted the draugr walking on the other side.

But I was oddly happy, and not just because I would rather see a draugr than a vampire. No, I was happy because I could feel the power more acutely now, and I could just make out a familiar shape on the wall behind the draugr. Unless my senses were failing me, I had found what I came looking for.

The next few minutes were a blur as we attacked the draugr wight together and overpowered it. And it's body fell backwards against the wall .. and the wall lit up with light in the form of characters .. an ancient tongue ... a word. And I learned it right then and there while Jenassa looked on in astonishment.

The word was 'air' in the ancient tongue, and I could sense it's meaning and power. Using this word would give me the power of the wind itself, allowing me to strike at my targets faster than before. A very useful shout, indeed.

We collected a few valuables and then left the ruins. I had a huge smile on my face underneath my helmet, and it wasn't just because we had killed the vampire .. or that I had learned a powerful new word. No, I was happy because my hunch to look for a word wall in the ancient nordic ruins had panned out, which meant I may be able to find more if I can just locate more ruins.

Back in Falkreath I sold the items we had hauled back and then let Jenassa know that she was free to go. I appreciated her service and told her I would probably hire her again in the future if I needed it. She wasn't cheap, but her services had been worth every coin.

such great entries I come check this everyday and am so excited when it says I have some alerts for this thread! Loving it currently doing this as a mage who uses shock magic almost exclusively. Makes the hardcore a lot easier though since I can use restoration. Still without my faithful sidekick lidya (i spelled her name wrong I think) I would have a hard time.

Yeah, the hardcore playstyle is .. hardcore, lol. I do think it would fit better with Expert difficulty instead of Master, but oh well. Glad you're enjoying the journal!

I headed out from Whiterun after a good night's rest. There was an old ruin I had discovered to the north several months ago, and today I was going to check it out. With any luck, it would fit the pattern and I would find another word wall.

The entrance to the ruin was pretty much a large architectural hole in the ground with steps leading to a door. I secured Dawn, then took the steps down. When I saw the door my heart skipped a beat.

ruindoor.avif

The emblem on the door is one I've come to recognize now. I seem to find it any time I'm in an old nordic ruin, and it's also the same emblem I've seen on every word wall so far. This was a good sign.

In through the door I went and found myself in a room with no immediately apparent exits other than the one I had just come through. One more step forward and suddenly a trio of draugr burst from their burial coffins. I was outnumbered but I didn't hesitate, and made sure I struck first. The other closed in and the fight got chaotic pretty quickly.

Finally I put down one of the draugr, and used that opportunity to shout the other two into the opposing wall. I ran to the nearest of them and began smashing his ancient body with my mace, simultaneously taking his health away and restoring my own. He managed to get back to his feet just in time for me to finish him off.

With only one draugr left, and with my health feeling mostly recovered, the fight was pretty routine. A series of blocked blows followed by counters, followed by deftly dodging a blow here and there and countering again. And soon the third was as dead as his friends.

But my victory was short-lived as I confirmed there didn't seem to be any way out of the room other than the way I had entered. I searched the room very carefully, even lighting a torch to make sure I missed nothing, but it was void of a second doorway.

And then I noticed that there was a doorway. It was directly opposite the one I had entered through, but it was impassable due to a cluster of giant boulders that now blocked it. There had been a collapse at some point, and now the route was closed.

I left the ruins frustrated, but not entirely. It was likely that beyond the debris there was a word wall. I just didn't have time to dig my way through centuries of fallen rocks to reach it. And then I got an idea.

What if there was another entrance to the ruins? What if I just followed the direction of the path from above ground? It could lead to another set of ruins that connected with this one, and I could maybe still gain access to the word wall .. if it existed.

I set out in the direction I knew the doorway led, and shortly came to the edge of a cliff. Below I could see another set of ruins, and my excitement peaked. I could also see several skeletons milling about, and noticed some architecture familiar to nordic ruins. That had to be the place!

My stomach was growling at this point, so I took a short break and had some lunch. I'm surprised I didn't choke on my food I was eating it so quickly. And with lunch done I headed down to the other ruins.

The two skeletons were easy to break through, and then a very nasty draugr burst forth from his tomb and we fought for some time. But he too succumbed to my strength and my tactics, and soon after I discovered that these ruins were just an old burial ground. If there had ever been a door or passage leading to more inside the mountain, it was lost to time now.

Dejected, I headed back to Whiterun to come up with a new plan. I know of another ruin off the road to Windhelm, and it might be good to check it out next.

have you shouted in any of the towns yet as I have been wondering why Hriskar has received no letters from a friend that tell you of a word wall

I do actually have that letter but I don't know where to find the location listed in the letter. So until I come across it in my travels, it's out of my reach.
