Oblivion's Acrobatics skill—is it actually worth leveling or a trap?

Coming from Skyrim where you just... walk everywhere, I'm confused about whether I should be sinking points into Acrobatics. On my first Oblivion playthrough and I keep seeing people jump everywhere, but it feels slow compared to just running. Is this one of those skills that's mandatory for a specific build, or can I safely ignore it and dump those level-ups into something useful like Blade or Destruction?

Acrobatics in Oblivion is honestly kind of a trap, yeah. You're right that it feels slow compared to running, and that's because it actually is - even with high Acrobatics, you're not going to out-move a horse or just sprinting on foot. The jumping thing looks cool but it's mechanically worse for traversal.

Where it matters is fall damage. If you're doing any dungeon diving or cliff exploration, high Acrobatics will let you take jumps that would otherwise wreck you. It's less "I need this for my build" and more "this saves me a bunch of healing potions." On my first playthrough I ignored it completely and just chugged potions whenever I fell. On my second I leveled it to like 50 and yeah, it was nice not constantly eating damage, but I wouldn't call it mandatory.

The real issue is that Oblivion's level scaling makes almost everything viable if you're willing to invest the points. You can dump everything into Blade and Destruction and be fine. Acrobatics is more of a quality-of-life thing - if you're the type who likes exploring and doesn't want to micromanage fall damage, grab it. If you're doing a pure combat build and sticking to roads, skip it without guilt.

Yeah, that's the honest take. I'd just add that Oblivion's fall damage is way more punishing than Skyrim's, so the previous reply nails it - it's not about speed, it's about not dying to your own mistakes in a dungeon.

That said, there's a middle ground nobody mentions: you don't need to dump points into Acrobatics like it's a major skill. Just letting it level passively while you jump around (which you'll do anyway exploring) gets you to like 40-50 without trying, and that's usually enough to shrug off most falls. You're not sacrificing anything by letting it tag along.

Where I'd disagree slightly is that it matters more if you're playing on a higher difficulty. On Normal? Yeah, skip it, chug a potion. On Oblivion difficulty or with mods that make enemies hit harder? That extra survivability from not eating fall damage frees up your potion slots for actual combat healing. Small thing, but it adds up.

The real trap skill in Oblivion is Athletics, imo - that one actually does feel mandatory because running speed is so slow, but at least it levels while you're just moving around the world. Acrobatics is optional in a way Athletics isn't.
