I've been playing through OpenMW for the first time and something just clicked. Skyrim's combat is all about positioning and timing your swings, right? But Morrowind's is basically a dice roll hidden behind animation. Your character's actual stats determine if you hit, not whether you aimed well.
It's wild because once you accept that, the whole game stops feeling clunky and starts feeling like a tabletop RPG pretending to be an action game. You can't just circle-strafe a Nix-Hound and win. Your Blade skill, your Agility, your luck - that's what matters. Miss a few times in a row and it's genuinely frustrating, but when you level up and suddenly start connecting? That feels earned in a way Skyrim never quite does.
Anyway I'm probably late to this realization but it's making my second Morrowind run way better than my first. Does anyone else prefer the stat-based hit detection or is that just masochism on my part?
