The Daedric quests are weirdly inconsistent and I can't stop thinking about it

I've been replaying and doing all the Daedric artifact quests back to back, and something's been bugging me. Like, some of them are genuinely unsettling and weird - The Mind of Madness, A Daedra's Best Friend, The House of Horrors - they have actual weight to them. But then you get quests like The Taste of Death or Ill Met by Moonlight where you're just... doing a thing for a Daedric prince and it barely registers as anything special.

And I'm not even talking about the writing quality necessarily. It's more like they're operating on totally different scales of consequence? Boethiah's Calling asks you to betray someone's trust in a really personal way. But then Clavicus Vile's quest is basically "go get this thing and trick a guy" and it's over. Both are technically Daedric pacts but one feels like you're genuinely making a choice that matters and the other feels like a fetch quest that happens to have a Daedric prince attached.

Does anyone else notice this, or am I reading too much into it? I wonder if it's intentional - like maybe the idea is that different Daedric princes care about different types of corruption, so some are more elaborate than others? Or did the devs just have more time to flesh out some quests than others.

You're not reading too much into it - that inconsistency is real, and I think you're onto something with the Daedric prince angle, but probably not in the way you mean.

The thing is, Skyrim's Daedric quests feel less like a unified "pact" system and more like individual side quests that happen to reward artifacts. Compare that to Morrowind, where you'd actually join Daedric cults with real hierarchies and ongoing relationships - the stakes felt different because you were embedded in something. Here, you're just a wanderer showing up, doing a task, and leaving with a shiny weapon.

That said, I think the variation actually works in Skyrim's favor in a weird way. Like, Boethiah doesn't care if you feel conflicted about backstabbing someone - the betrayal itself IS the point. But Clavicus Vile is petty and loves a good con, so of course his quest is lighter and more about outsmarting him than about moral weight. The Mind of Madness is cosmic horror because Sheogorath is fundamentally unhinged. They're not all the same type of corruption because the Daedra aren't the same type of entity.

Where I'd agree with you is that some quests just feel undercooked. The Taste of Death doesn't really do anything with Molag Bal's whole violation-and-domination thing - you just kill a cannibal. That one feels like it needed another draft. Ill Met by Moonlight is better because Hircine at least gets something out of the hunt itself, even if the quest structure is basic.

Does the inconsistency bother you mechanically, or is it more the narrative feel?
