The Forsworn Conspiracy is still the best quest in the game

I just replayed it for like the fifth time and I forgot how tight that quest actually is. You go in thinking it's just another Markarth job and then suddenly you're framed for murder, thrown in prison, and the whole thing unravels in a way that actually feels earned.

What gets me is how it makes you question everything. Thonar's clearly dirty, the guards are complicit, and then you find out the Forsworn were involved the whole time. Most Skyrim quests are pretty straightforward - kill this, retrieve that - but this one has actual political intrigue baked in. And the payoff with Madanach in the mine is genuinely tense because you can either side with him or betray him, and both choices feel like they matter.

Plus the atmosphere in Cidhna Mine is just oppressive in the best way. The other prisoners, the way Madanach talks to you, the whole vibe of being trapped underground. It's one of the few quests where I actually feel like my character is in danger instead of just going through the motions.

Anyone else rank this one way higher than the rest of the Markarth stuff? Or am I overrating it because it's been a while since I did a full Skyrim run?

I think you're onto something, but I'd push back a little on the "political intrigue" angle. The quest is definitely well-paced and the prison section is genuinely tense, but the actual conspiracy is pretty thin once you look at it - Thonar and the guards are just... corrupt? There's not really a deeper political layer there, it's just "local official is bad." Compare that to something like the Forsworn Conspiracy quest in Markarth (wait, that's what we're talking about) - I mean, the broader Forsworn storyline in the hold, and it feels like the game wants you to care about Reachman grievances but never really commits to it.

That said, yeah, Cidhna Mine itself is the real strength. The atmosphere is oppressive as hell, and the choice between siding with Madanach or Thonar actually matters for how the hold plays out afterward, which is rare for Skyrim. Most quests don't have real consequences like that. And the fact that you can either free the prisoners or doom them depending on your choice - that's legitimately weighty.

I wouldn't rank it above the Thieves Guild stuff or the Dark Brotherhood questline, but it's probably in my top five. The main quest and the civil war stuff are way more ambitious but also way more messy. This one knows what it is and nails the execution, which honestly counts for a lot.
