I've been thinking about this a lot on my current playthrough. The Greybeards literally teach you three shouts over the entire main questline. Three. And two of them you could have learned from random word walls anyway. They spend all this time making you climb the mountain, meditate, listen to them whisper cryptically, and at the end they're like "yeah go talk to Paarthurnax, he'll actually teach you stuff." Which like... why didn't you just say that from the start?
And the whole "we don't speak because words are too powerful" thing falls apart the second Arngeir starts lecturing you about Talos politics. If words are so dangerous that you took a vow of silence, maybe don't use them to tell the Dragonborn about your opinions on the Civil War? That's not spiritual discipline, that's just inconsistent worldbuilding.
The real shame is that the actual lore around the Voice and the Way of the Voice is genuinely interesting - the whole idea of understanding the true nature of things through the Thu'um, the connection to the Throat of the World as this liminal space. But the game never really lets you feel that. You're just doing fetch quests and listening to old men hum at you.
Paarthurnax gets it right. Five minutes with him teaches you more about what the Dragonborn actually is than the entire Greybeard questline.
