Started replaying Oblivion after years on Skyrim and I forgot how much the opening actually sets the tone. You're just a prisoner, no grand destiny nonsense, and the fact that the Emperor himself walks past your cell is this perfect slow-burn introduction to how big the world actually is. Then he gets assassinated like two minutes later and you realize nothing is safe.
Helgen feels rushed by comparison. Dragons attack, civil war is happening, you escape through a dungeon, done. It's functional but it doesn't have that same weight. The Oblivion intro takes time to let you breathe and explore a bit before throwing you into the world, and somehow that makes the world feel bigger even though you're literally in a prison.
Also the fact that you can just walk out and ignore the main quest for 200 hours without feeling weird about it. Skyrim's always nagging you about Alduin and the Greybeards. Oblivion's like "cool, go do whatever" and means it.
