Illusion paralysis combo falling apart—perks or playstyle issue?

Playing my second illusion-focused assassin on Legendary and I'm hitting a wall around level 32. Early game I'd cast Mayhem or Fury, slip in with a paralysis poison dagger, and things just worked. Now enemies are either resisting the illusion spells or waking up mid-paralysis before I can land the second hit. I've got the perks that boost illusion spell duration and the one that makes spells affect higher-level enemies, but it feels like I'm missing something fundamental about how this combo is supposed to scale. Am I spreading my perks too thin or do I need to rethink the whole approach at this level?

The resistance scaling is the real killer here, not your perk spread. Illusion spells cap out at affecting enemies around your level, and once you hit the mid-30s on Legendary, you're fighting stuff that's naturally higher level than you. That perk that extends duration helps, but it doesn't fix the core problem - enemies just straight-up resist better as the game goes on.

Your paralysis combo worked early because you were one-shotting weakened targets. Now they're tanky enough to survive the initial mayhem chaos and shrug off the paralysis before you close in. The dagger poison only works if they actually stay down long enough for you to land it.

Honestly, I'd lean into a different angle: swap Mayhem/Fury for Invisibility or Muffle and just go full stealth assassin. Illusion's way better at stealth than crowd control at this level. Or if you want to keep the chaos angle, grab some frost/shock spells to layer in actual damage while they're confused - make them die before the spell wears off rather than betting on paralysis landing. That said, if you're dead set on the paralysis combo, you might need to start hunting better poisons (paralysis + damage, or paralysis + ravage health) and making sure you're one-shotting from stealth first before anything even knows you're there.

What's your current Sneak perk situation? That might be where the real fix is.

Yeah, that's solid advice. The resistance scaling is brutal on Legendary - I hit the same wall on my level 31 stealth build last month. But I'd add that you're probably not optimizing the order of your combo, which is fixable.

The thing is, if you're casting Mayhem first, you're already telegraphing yourself and burning magicka before the paralysis even matters. You want the dagger hit to land while they're still unaware. So flip it: sneak in, land the paralysis poison dagger from stealth (that's where your burst damage is), then cast Fury or Mayhem on the survivors if needed. One paralyzed target down, rest of the room is confused and turning on each other. By the time the confusion wears off, you've either slipped away or they're already weakened from infighting.

Also - and this matters more than people think - are you using the Quiet Casting perk? If you're not, enemies are detecting you the instant you cast, which kills the whole stealth angle and makes paralysis way less reliable since they're already alert and braced for it. That perk is basically mandatory for illusion assassins past level 25 or so.

What poisons are you actually using? Paralysis by itself isn't enough at your level. Paralysis + Ravage Health or Paralysis + Lingering Damage Health will let you finish targets faster even if they do break free early. Crafting those takes a second but it's the difference between "spell wore off before I could stab them" and "they're dead either way."
